Field Hockey Earns 3-2 Victory At Dartmouth

Ally DeCoste tallied the game winner with 3:18 left in regulation off a feed from Sophia Pompeo.

HANOVER, N.H. – The Providence College field hockey team earned its first victory of the season on Sept. 5 as it defeated Dartmouth, 3-2, in Hanover, N.H. Ally DeCoste scored the game-winner with 3:18 left to play in regulation as the Friars improved to 1-3 on the year. Dartmouth moved to 0-3 on the season.
 
1ST QUARTER:
• Providence outshot the Big Green 4-1 in the first quarter.
Asia Porter recorded one save, while the Friars' offense forced Dartmouth's goalkeeper to make three stops.
• Both teams recorded one penalty corner in the first.
 
2ND QUARTER:
• The Friars took a 1-0 lead at the 17:02 mark. Providence was awarded a corner and Sophia Pompeo cashed in for her second of the season following initial shot attempts by DeCoste and Amanda Collins. Pompeo's goal came off a rebound, unassisted.
• Dartmouth tied the game, 1-1, at 24:59 as Lila Browne finished off an initial shot by Bronwyn Bird on a penalty corner. Bird's shot was disrupted by Porter and a Friar defender, but the loose ball drifted behind Porter and Browne was able to capitalize.
• Providence held a 9-3 advantage in shots and 6-2 edge in shots on goal through two quarters. Both teams registered two penalty corners.
 
3RD QUARTER:
• Dartmouth went ahead, 2-1, at 34:27 after Myah Pease converted a penalty stroke.
• The Friars leveled the score, 2-2, at 41:22 as Lisa McNamara made good on a penalty stroke opportunity of her own.
• Each team recorded four shot attempts in the quarter. Three of the Friars' four shot were on target.
• Through 45 minutes of action, Providence led in shots (13-7) shots on goal (9-4).
 
4TH QUARTER:
• Dartmouth nearly regained the lead at 50:02, but Lilly-Boau Shepherd's attempt hit the post.
• Both teams amped up their level of urgency in the closing stretch of the game.
• The Friars broke through for the game-winning goal with just 3:18 remaining in regulation.  Pompeo drove the baseline and sent a centering pass to DeCoste, who one-timed the ball into the upper portion of the cage.
 
NOTES / HIGHLIGHTS
• Pompeo paced the Friar offense with three points on one goal and one assist. Dating back to the 2021 season, Pompeo has scored at least two points in five of the Friars' last seven matches. 
• During the seven-game stretch, Pompeo has tallied 16 points on seven goals and two assists.
• Porter finished the day with two saves, while Ava Carlson stopped eight shots for Dartmouth.
• The Friars completed the game with a 15-10 advantage in shots and an 11-4 edge in shots on goal. Dartmouth held the advantage in penalty corner opportunities, 4-3.
• Providence is scheduled to play its first six games on the road before hosting BIG EAST foe Villanova in its 2022 home opener at Lennon Family Field on Sept. 16.
• Seven of the Friars' 17 regular-season opponents are currently ranked in the NFHCA Division I National Coaches' Poll.
 
WHAT'S NEXT:
• Providence will finish its six-game road stretch to start the 2022 season when it travels to Iowa City, Iowa to face No. 5 Iowa and No. 25 UMass. Please note that both games have updated start times. On Friday, Sept. 9 the Friars' match against Iowa will be played at 3:00 p.m. (ET) and on Saturday, Sept. 10, PC will take on the Minutewomen at 2:00 p.m. (ET).
