Field Hockey Finishes Six-Game Road Stretch Against A Pair Of Nationally Ranked Opponents

Friars will face No. 6 Iowa and No. 22 Mass in Iowa City, Iowa.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College field hockey team will conclude a six-game road stretch to start the 2022 season when it travels to Iowa City, Iowa for a pair of non-conference matches against nationally-ranked opponents. On Friday, Sept. 9, the Friars will face No. 6 Iowa at 3:00 p.m. (ET). Providence will then take on No. 22 UMass in a neutral-site game at Iowa's facility on Saturday, Sept. 10 at 2:00 p.m. (ET).

SCOUTING PROVIDENCE COLLEGE:
• The Friars enter the weekend with an 1-3 record. 
• Providence is coming off a 3-2 victory at Dartmouth on Sept. 5. Trailing 2-1 in the third quarter, the Friars went on to score two unanswered goals to seal the win. 
Ally DeCoste scored the game-winning goal with 3:18 left in regulation and was assisted by Sophia Pompeo. Pompeo paced the Friars' offense with three points on one goal and one assist.
• In the last seven games, which includes the closing stretch of the 2021 season, Pompeo has recorded 16 points on seven goals and two assists. 
•  Pompeo leads the Friars through four games in 2022 with five points on two goals and one assist.
• Three other Friars have scored one goal this season, including DeCoste, Lisa McNamara and Cami Crook. Crook tallied her first career goal as a Friar in the team's season-opener against Boston University.
Asia Porter has played all four games in goal for Providence and has recorded a 3.03 goals against average and a 0.684 save percentage. She was collected a season-high 16 saves vs. No. 14 Boston College on opening weekend of the season.
• In 2022, Providence is slated to face six opponents currently ranked in the NFHCA Division I National Coaches' Poll (Preseason): No. 14 Boston College (L, 5-0), No. 6 Iowa, No. 22 UMass, No. 10 Connecticut, No. 14 Old Dominion and No. 11 Liberty. A seventh team – Maine – was ranked in the preseason poll but dropped out of the rankings in the NFHCA's latest release.
• Providence finished the 2021 season with an 8-10 overall record and a 2-5 mark in the BIG EAST Conference (sixth). 
• The Friars compiled an 8-3 mark at home on Lennon Family Field. Seven of the Friars' 18 games were decided by one goal. Additionally, six of Providence's 10 losses came at the hands of nationally-ranked teams.
• Providence will play its first six games on the road, including three matches vs. nationally-ranked opponents. 
• The Friars' first home game is scheduled for September 16 vs. BIG EAST foe Villanova.
• This season, the Friars will feature a veteran squad as 14 of the 23 players on the roster are upperclassmen, including two graduate students, five seniors and seven juniors. The team returns a total of 20 players from last season's roster, including eight starters.
• Offensively, the Friars return 10 of their 13 players who scored at least one point last season, including four of their five double-digit point scorers. Current graduate student Niamh Gowing paced the Friars in 2021 with 20 points on six goals and eight assists. Pompeo (16 points), Nora Goddard-Despot (13 points) and McNamara (12 points) also return to the line-up in 2022. 
• McNamara was selected to play in the 2022 Nexus Championship this summer, while Goddard-Despot has been an active member of the Team Canada's Junior National Team.  
• Graduate student Amanda Collins has been a staple for Providence College on defense and was named to the All-BIG EAST Second Team and NFHCA Division I All-Northeast Region Second Team in 2021. She also is a key contributor for the Friars' offensive and defensive corner units. She finished sixth on the team in scoring last year with nine points on four goals and one assist.
 
 
SCOUTING NO. 6 IOWA:
• Iowa is ranked sixth in the Penn Monto/NFHCA Coaches' poll after winning three of its first four games to open the 2022 season. The Hawkeyes are outscoring their opposition, 15-3.
• Alex Wesneski and Annika Herbine both rank in the top 10 in the Big Ten in scoring. Wesneski is tied for second with six goals, while Herbine is tied for sixth with three. Herbine is also tied for the league lead with two game-winners.
• Iowa posted back-to-back shutouts in wins over Boston University and Saint Louis. The Hawkeyes allowed just six shots in the two victories.
• Iowa ranks second nationally in assists per game (4.00), fifth in shutouts per game (0.50), sixth in points per game (11.00) and eighth in goals per game (3.50) and scoring margin (2.33).
• The Hawkeyes return eight starters and 18 letterwinners from a team that finished 17-3, claimed an outright Big Ten title and advanced to the Elite Eight for the 19th time in program history in 2021.
 
SCOUTING NO. 22 UMASS:
• UMass enters the weekend with a 3-1 record after posting a pair of victories last weekend. The Minutemen downed UMass Lowell, 3-2, in a shootout before beating New Hampshire, 4-3, in overtime.
• The team's only loss came in the second game of the season, falling to top-ranked Northwestern, 4-1.
• Jess Beech leads UMass in scoring with six points on two goals and two assists.
• Gabrielle Benkenstein (five points) and Dempsey Campbell (four points) join Beech for the team lead in goals, with two apiece.
• Myrte van Herwijnen has played all four games in the cage and owns a 2.66 goals against average and 0.676 save percentage.


WHAT'S NEXT:
• Providence play its first home game of the 2022 season at Lennon Family Field on Friday, Sept. 16 when it hosts Villanova in the BIG EAST Conference opener. The game is slated to begin at 4:00 p.m. The Friars will finish the weekend at home with a non-conference match against Bucknell on Sunday, Sept. 18 at 1:00 p.m.
