PHILADELPHIA, PA. – The Providence College volleyball team defeated Penn in straight sets at the Penn Sheraton University City Invitational on Sept. 17 in Philadelphia, Pa. The Friars advanced to 8-4 on the season.
FIRST SET HIGHLIGHTS: Providence took set one, 25-20.
- After a challenge got the Friars their tenth point, Providence went on a 6-3 scoring run to bring their lead to 16-11. Providence maintained the lead the rest of the set.

Brielle Mullally (Garden Grove, Calif.) was all over the floor recording a set-high three kills and a team-high seven assists and five digs. The senior also recorded one block assist and the only team service ace.

Kayla Grant (Rowlett, Texas) and
Emma Nelson (West Chester, Pa.) matched the set-high three kills. Grant hit .600.

Caroline LaMacchia (Rockville Centre, N.Y.) matched the team-best five digs.
SECOND SET HIGHLIGHTS: The Friars won their second straight set, 25-18.
- Providence broke an early 6-6 tie and was able to maintain the lead throughout the rest of the set.
- Nelson paced the Friar offense with a team-best five kills.
Maryanne Boyle (Blacklick, Ohio) and Mullally added four kills apiece.

Shaliyah Rhoden (Rowlett, Texas) and Grant each notched two block assists.
- Mullally and
Sammie Ruggles (North Olmsted, Ohio) tallied nine and five assists, respectively.
THIRD SET HIGHLIGHTS: Providence edged out Penn 28-26 to pull of three straight wins.
- A 24-23 lead by the Friars forced Penn to call a late timeout. This led to a point-for-point battle until the Friars notched two straight to come out on top.

Kayla Grant recorded a team-best seven kills on eight attempts.
Emma Nelson added six more kills to combine for 13.
- Ruggles put up nine assists, Mullally added six more.
- LaMacchia cracked double-digit digs for the second time this season after adding three digs to reach 10 in the match.

Sasha Rudich (Austin, Texas) registered two block assists and a solo block.

WHAT'S NEXT… The Friars are set to open BIG EAST play in the Tri-state area as they will travel to Queens, N.Y. to take on St. Johns on Friday, Sept. 23 at 7:00 p.m. Providence will remain on the road to play Seton Hall at 6:00 p.m. on Sept. 24 in South Orange, N.J.
