IOWA CITY, IOWA – The Providence College field hockey team closed a six-game road stretch to start the 2022 season, falling to No. 22 UMass, 2-0, on Sept. 10 in Iowa City, Iowa.
1ST QUARTER:
• The first shot attempt of the game was not taken until the 10:18 mark of the first quarter, but UMass' bid by Mali Herberhold sailed wide of the cage.
• It proved to be the only shot attempt of the first quarter as the two teams went into the break tied, 0-0.
2ND QUARTER:
• UMass scored two goals in a span of 3:53 to take a 2-0 lead into halftime.
• Herberhold converted the first goal at 25:00 on a penalty corner, assisted by Mia Smith.
• The two players reversed roles at 28:53, as Smith scored off a deflection, assisted by Herberhold.
• At halftime, the Minutewomen held a 5-0 advantage in shots and 2-0 edge in penalty corners.
3RD QUARTER:
• The score remained 2-0 through three quarters of action.
• UMass attempted the only shot of the frame as play was back-and-forth throughout the midfield.
4TH QUARTER:
• The Minutewomen rattled off three shot attempts in the opening two minutes of play in the fourth, but the Friar defense managed to hold firm.
• UMass maintained its two-goal advantage to claim the win (2-0).
NOTES / HIGHLIGHTS:

Asia Porter finished the day with four saves for the Friars in goal.
• The Friars have played their first six games on the road and will return home to Lennon Family in Providence, R.I. to host BIG EAST foe Villanova on Sept. 16.
• Six of the Friars' 17 regular-season opponents are currently ranked in the NFHCA Division I National Coaches' Poll. The Friars are currently 0-3 vs. ranked teams.
WHAT'S NEXT:
• Providence (1-5) will return home to Providence, R.I. to play its first home matches of the 2022 season. The Friars will host Villanova in the BIG EAST opener on Friday, Sept. 16 at 4:00 p.m., followed by a non-conference game against Bucknell on Sunday, Sept. 18 at 1:00 p.m.
