NEWTON, MASS. – The Providence College field hockey team fell to No. 14 Boston College, 5-0, in Newton, Mass. on Aug. 27. The Friars fall to 0-2 on the year, while the Eagles start the season 1-0.
1ST QUARTER:
• The Friars recorded the first two penalty corner opportunities of the game, but the Eagle's goalkeeper turned away both shot attempts by
Cami Crook on Providence's set pieces.
• Providence's
Asia Porter made an impressive save on a shot by Margo Carlin at 10:28, but Victoria Arra was in the right place at the right time, picking up the rebound and giving BC a 1-0 lead at 10:31.
•
Ally DeCoste nearly put home the equalizer at 12:10, but her shot redirected off the goalkeeper and wide of the cage.
• Porter made a diving save on a penalty corner with 1:49 left in the first to maintain the one-goal deficit.
• Boston College led in shots, 7-3, and penalty corners (2-1).
2ND QUARTER:
• Porter continued to anchor the Friars defense in the second, turning away multiple opportunities inside BC's offensive circle.
• Boston College was able to break through for its second goal of the game at 22:41 as Kara Heck fired a shot high into the cage out of Porter's reach.
• The Eagles took their two-goal lead into the halftime break.
3RD QUARTER:
• The Eagles took a 3-0 lead just 1:09 into the third quarter with a tally by Martina Giacchino.
• Both teams were relatively quiet otherwise, as BC outshot Providence 3-1 in the frame.
4TH QUARTER:
• Carlin made it a 4-0 game as she picked up a rebound off Porter's 12
th save of the game and redirected the ball into the back of the cage at 47:48.
• Just 35 seconds later, Peyton Hale converted BC's fifth goal of the evening on a penalty corner.
• Providence played the final 4:40 of regulation with a player advantage as a Boston College field player was assessed a yellow card.
• A few offensive opportunities developed for the Friars heading into the circle, but they were unable to find the back of the net.
NOTES / HIGHLIGHTS:
• Through the opening 30 minutes of play, Porter collected 10 saves.
• BC held a 21-4 advantage in shots during the first and finished the game with a 35-6 edge.
• Porter finished the game with 16 saves.
• Carine Van Wiechen, a member of the Dutch National Team, posted two saves for Boston College.
