PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College field hockey team will open the 2022 regular-season schedule on the road against a pair of regional foes. On Friday, Aug. 26, the Friars will take on Boston University at 2:00 p.m., followed by a match-up against No. 14 Boston College on Saturday, Aug. 27 at 5:00 p.m. Both games will be played at the Boston College Field Hockey Complex in Newton, Mass.

SCOUTING PROVIDENCE COLLEGE:
• Providence finished the 2021 season with an 8-10 overall record and a 2-5 mark in the BIG EAST Conference (sixth).
• The Friars compiled an 8-3 mark at home on Lennon Family Field. Seven of the Friars' 18 games were decided by one goal. Additionally, six of Providence's 10 losses came at the hands of nationally-ranked teams.
• In 2022, Providence is slated to face seven opponents currently ranked in the NFHCA Division I National Coaches' Poll (Preseason): No. 14 Boston College, No. 5 Iowa, No. 25 UMass, No. 15 Connecticut, No. 22 Maine, No. 19 Old Dominion and No. 6 Liberty.
• Providence will play its first six games on the road, including three matches vs. nationally-ranked opponents.
• The Friars first home game is scheduled for September 16 vs. BIG EAST foe Villanova.
• This season, the Friars will feature a veteran squad as 14 of the 23 players on the roster are upperclassmen, including two graduate students, five seniors and seven juniors. The team returns a total of 20 players from last season's roster, including eight starters.
• Offensively, the Friars return 10 of their 13 players who scored at least one point last season, including four of their five double-digit point scorers. Current graduate student
Niamh Gowing paced the Friars in 2021 with 20 points on six goals and eight assists. Seniors
Sophia Pompeo (16 points),
Nora Goddard-Despot (13 points) and
Lisa McNamara (12 points) also return to the line-up in 2022. McNamara was selected to play in the 2022 Nexus Championship this summer, while Goddard-Despot has been an active member of the Team Canada's Junior National Team.

Amanda Collins has been a staple for Providence College on defense and was named to the All-BIG EAST Second Team and NFHCA Division I All-Northeast Region Second Team in 2021. She also is a key contributor for the Friars' offensive and defensive corner units. She finished sixth on the team in scoring last year with nine points on four goals and one assist.
• In goal, Providence returns junior
Asia Porter, who played the majority of minutes in the cage last season (955) and posted a 0.759 save percentage and a 2.20 goals against average.
• Last season, Providence snapped a six-game winless streak to Boston University as it recorded a 2-1 victory over the Terriers on Aug. 29 in Providence, R.I.
• Gowing scored the game winning goal 1:24 into the fourth quarter. Boston University held the advantage in shots (16-5), shots on goal (13-4) and penalty corners (11-1), but the Friars took advantage of their opportunities.
• The Friars and Eagles last met during the spring of 2021, as the 2020 fall campaign was moved due to the COVID-10 pandemic. Boston College earned a 2-0 victory at Lennon Family Field in Providence on April 14.
Asia Porter made 17 saves for the Friars in that match-up.
SCOUTING BOSTON UNIVERSITY:
• Boston University completed the 2021 campaign with a 4-14 overall record, including a 2-4 mark in the Patriot League.
• The Terriers return their top-two offensive threats from a season ago in Payton Anderson and Thalia Steenssens. Anderson recorded 24 points on 10 goals and four assists, while Steenssens notched eight points (3g / 2a).
• BU returns it primary goalkeepers, led by Caroline Kelly, who played 861 minutes in the cage and posted a 2.72 goals against average and a 0.729 save percentage. Kate Thomason played 197 minutes and recorded a 3.34 goals against average and a 0.560 save percentage.
SCOUTING NO. 14 BOSTON COLLEGE:
• Boston College enters the match ranked No. 14 in the NFHCA Preseason Division I National Coaches' Poll.
• The Eagles finished the 2021 campaign with a 12-6 overall record, including a 3-3 mark in the ACC.
• Boston College also posted a 6-6 record vs. nationally-ranked opponents.
• BC started the year with six-straight wins, including victories over No. 9 Maryland (3-2), No. 4 Northwestern (2-1) and No. 12 UConn (2-1).
• Boston College returns three of its top four scorers from a season ago, including Sarah Johnson, who paced the Eagles in all three major offensive categories: points (17), goals (six) and assists (five). Milagros Arteta finished second on the team in scoring last year with 13 points, while Margo Carlin finished fourth (10 points).
• The Eagles will look to replace its primary goalkeeper from a season ago. Jonna Kennedy played 962 minutes in the cage during the 2021 slate and posted a 2.71 goals against average and a 0.674 save percentage.
• Emily Gillespie saw action in three games for BC at goalkeeper and posted a 2-0 record with a 1.89 goals against average and a 0.769 save percentage. Freshman Carine Van Wiechen will join the goalkeeping unit for her first collegiate season.
• Boston College leads the all-time series against Providence, 24-13, including victories in each of the last 11 meetings.

• Providence will remain on the road to face New Hampshire (Sept. 2) and Dartmouth (3:00 p.m.).
