No. 5 seed Providence will face No. 4 seed Butler in the BIG EAST Quarterfinals on Nov. 5 at 7:00 p.m.

FRIARS SET TO FACE BUTLER IN BIG EAST QUARTERFINALS

The Friars enter the BIG EAST Tournament as the No. 5 seed. Providence will face No. 4 seed Butler on Saturday, Nov. 5 at 7:00 p.m. at the Bud and Jackie Sellick Bowl in Indianapolis, Ind. The Friars defeated Creighton, 4-2 at home on Wednesday, Nov. 2 to punch their ticket into the Tournament. The Bulldogs tied Xavier, 3-3, in a back-and-forth game on Nov. 2 to earn the opportunity to host the First Round.

FRIARS MAKING 22ND APPEARANCE IN THE BIG EAST TOURNAMENT

Providence is making its 21st appearance all-time in the BIG EAST Tournament. The Friars have posted a 22-20 overall record in BIG EAST Tournament play.

HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVE

The Friars made just four appearances in the tournament from 1983 to 2001, but have been mainstays in the tournament for the last two decades. Including this season Providence has qualified for 18 of the last 21 tournaments.

FRIARS EARN THE NO. 5 SEED FOR THE 11TH TIME

Providence earned the No. 5 seed for the 11th time in tournament history and have completed a 5-5 record as the No. 5 seed all-time. A full breakdown of records by seed is below:

FRIARS ALL-TIME IN THE BIG EAST QUARTERFINAL

The Friars have played in the BIG EAST Quarterfinal 14 times. Providence is 10-4 all-time in the Quarterfinals, with its last appearance coming in 2019 - a 3-0 victory over Marquette.

FRIARS VS. THE NO. 4 SEED IN THE BIG EAST TOURNAMENT

The Friars are 3-4 all-time vs. the No. 4 seed in the BIG EAST Tournament. In 1984, first-seeded Providence defeated No. 4 seed Villanova in the semifinals. In 1998, the fifth-seeded Friars fell to No. 4 seed Georgetown in the quarterfinals. In 2009 and 2010, No. 5 seed Providence defeated No. 4 seed Villanova in the First Round. In 2011, the fifth-seeded Friars fell to fourth-seeded Louisville 5-0 in the First Round. In 2016, No. 1 seed Providence was defeated by fourth-seeded Creighton in the semifinals. In 2017, fifth-seeded Providence fell to No. 4 Xavier in the quarterfinals.

THE ONE AND ONLY

The Friars claimed the BIG EAST Tournament title in 2014. That year, Providence entered tournament play as the No. 4 seed and took down No. 2 seed Xavier in the championship game, 2-1.

SCOUTING PROVIDENCE

The Friars enter the tournament with an 5-4-7 overall record, including a 3-2-5 mark in the BIG EAST Conference.

The Friars currently average 10.75 shots a game with 172 total shots this season. They have scored 24 goals across 16 games, averaging 1.50 goals per game.

The Friars have also notched 21 assists and 69 total points.

On Nov. 2, the Friars limited the Creighton offense to two goals on 16 total shots (11SOG). Creighton entered the match ranked third in the nation in scoring offense


BALANCED ATTACK

Thirteen different players on the roster have scored at least one goal, and five of those 13 are multi-goal scorers. The Friars have scored 10 first-half goals and 14 second-half goals.

FRIARS VS. RANKED OPPONENTS

This season, Providence faced one ranked opponent. The Friars tied then-No. 19 Xavier (0-0) on Oct. 29.

PLAYERS TO WATCH

Gevork Diarbian leads the team in scoring (14 points) with a team-best four goals and five assists, making him the only Friar with double-digit points. Diarbian is ranked second in the conference in shot accuracy and 26th among NCAA Division I players. He has put 17 of his 30 shots on target (.576).

Ramzi Qawasmy is second on the team with eight points on four goals. Qawasmy has been called up to take four penalty kicks this season and was able to convert on all of them. He has also anchored the Friar defense that has recorded five shutouts this season.

Gil Santos (seven points), Luis Garcia (six points) and Armaan Wilson (six points) round out the list of players who have more than five points. Santos owns three goals and one assist, while Garcia and Wilson have each collected one goal and four assists.

Christopher Roman has also been a force in the Friars' midfield. He has averaged 88.625 minutes per game and has one goal and one assist.

Rimi Olatunji  has played 450 minutes in goal for Providence this season and owns a 1.00 goals against average and a 0.792 save percentage. He has been the goalkeeper for the last five games of Providence's regular season and has a 2-1-2 record.


OFFENSIVE THREATS IN BIG EAST PLAY

Gevork Diarbian paces the Friars' offense vs. BIG EAST opponents with eight points. He has recorded two goals and a team-high four assists. Ramzi Qawasmy currently leads the BIG EAST with three game-winning goals in conference play.

Gil Santos and Jason Pereira have also notched two goals in conference play, with Santos also adding an assist.


ALL-TIME SERIES VS. BUTLER

The Friars and Bulldogs have met 11 times in the history of the two soccer programs. Butler leads the all-time series, 4-6-1.

Providence defeated Butler during the regular season in Providence, R.I. on Oct. 15 (2-1). The Friars took an early 1-0 lead as Gil Santos scored at 7:32. The Bulldogs scored the equalizer as Kyle Hagerman headed the ball to the back of the net at 42:07. Providence responded in the 53rd minute after Qawasmy converted on a penalty kick to give the Friars the 2-1 lead.

Butler held a 15-8 advantage in shots (8-6 shots on goal) and a 6-4 advantage in corner kicks.


PROVIDENCE VS. BUTLER IN THE BIG EAST TOURNAMENT

The Friars and Bulldogs have met just twice in the BIG EAST Tournament and dates back to the 2015 quarterfinal round. The No. 6 seed Friars advanced to the semifinals over the No. 2-seed Bulldogs on penalty kicks. Regulation and two overtimes left the match knotted, 2-2. Providence edged Butler with a 4-2 advantage in PKs. In 2021, the No. 2 Friars triumphed over the sixth-seeded Bulldogs, 2-0 in the semifinal round.
