PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College women's cross country team will run at the 2022 NCAA Division I Cross Country Championship on Saturday, Nov. 19 at the Greiner Family OSU Cross Country Course in Stillwater, Okla. On the men's side, graduate student
Marcelo Rocha (Peabody, Mass.) earned an individual spot at the NCAA Cross Country Championships for the second consecutive year. The women's race will begin at 10:20 a.m. ET followed by the men's race at 11:10 a.m. ET.
The Friar women will be returning to the NCAA Championship for the second consecutive year and 30
th time in program history. At the 2021 championship, the Friars earned a 26
th-place finish. The Friar women's team has won the NCAA title twice in program history, in 1995 and 2013. In 2004 former Friar Kim Smith won the NCAA Championship and became the only individual winner in program history.
Providence added to its NCAA resume on Friday, Nov. 11, placing first at the NCAA Northeast Regionals in New York, N.Y. and earning an automatic bid to the NCAA Championships. Jane Buckley (Cork, Ireland) continued her strong freshman year campaign by finishing third overall (20:27.4). Junior Shannon Flockhart (Longstanton, England) and freshman Níamh O'Mahony (Kerry, Ireland) were the second and third runners across the line for Providence, placing 12
th and 14
th, respectively. Rounding out the top-five was graduate student
Orla O'Connor (Waterford, Ireland) and senior
Lilly Tuck (Sunderland, Canada) placing 17
th (21:02.8) and 25
th (21:10.3), respectively.
Seniors Alex O'Neill (Ennis, Ireland), Tessa Hunt (Wellington, New Zealand), and sophomore Kimberley May (Auckland, New Zealand) round out the eight runners who will be traveling for Providence.
Of the eight Friar women traveling to the championship Flockhart, Tuck, May, O'Connor, and O'Neill traveled to the 2021 championships.
Rocha qualified with his fifth-place finish (29:37.4) at the NCAA Northeast Regionals.
