PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College volleyball team fell to Butler University in four sets on Saturday, Oct. 22 at Alumni Hall in Providence, R.I. Providence dropped to 10-12 on the season (2-8 BIG EAST), while Butler improved to 11-11 (5-5 BIG EAST).
FIRST SET HIGHLIGHTS: Butler won the opening set, 25-16.
- Butler started the set on a 9-4 run forcing a Providence timeout. Brielle Mullally (Garden Grove, Calif.) was responsible for three of the Friars' first four points after notching three early kills.
- The Friars found themselves down 19-11 late in the set and were able to get within six (21-15) but Butler maintained control to take the set, 25-16.
- Mullally paced the Friar offense with four kills and three assists.
- Sammie Ruggles (North Olmsted, Ohio) matched Mullally's three assists.
- Five athletes put Providence on the board for digs, totaling five in the set.
SECOND SET HIGHLIGHTS: Butler took the second set, 25-18, for a 2-0 edge in the match.
- Butler took an early lead but was not able to mount more than a two-point advantage over the Friars until the middle stages of the set.
- Mullally and Emma Nelson (West Chester, Pa.) each opened the set with two kills off the bat.
- A small breakaway from the Bulldogs (18-14) led to a mid-set Providence timeout.
- Out of the break, the Bulldogs were able to continue their lead to close the set, 25-18.
- Mackenzie Taylor (Holbrook, N.Y.) led the Friars defensively, collecting a team-best 11 digs.
- Sasha Rudich (Austin, Texas) and Shaliyah Rhoden (Rowlett, Texas) recorded the Friars' first blocks of the day.
THIRD SET HIGHLIGHTS: The Friars battled back to take set three, 25-22.
- Providence found itself down 7-4 early on. However, after two kills by the Friars and four straight errors by the Bulldogs, Providence took a 10-8 lead.
- In the middle stages of the set, the Friars earned five straight points (16-10), forcing a Butler timeout.
- Out of the break, the Bulldogs closed the deficit to two (18-16).
- From this point, the teams went point-for-point until Butler called their second timeout of the set, down 21-19.
- Kayla Grant (Rowlett, Texas) clinched the 25-22 win for the Friars with a kill to end the set. This kill marked Grant's fourth of the set.
- Alicja Pokrzywa (Parsippany, N.J.) collected a team-best five digs, followed by Caroline LaMacchia's (Rockville Centre, N.Y.) four.
FOURTH SET HIGHLIGHTS: Butler won the fourth set, 25-20, to take the match.
- The Friars scored the first three points of the set, led by two kills from Mullally.
- Providence controlled the lead early on, which turned to an 11-11 tie that led to a point-for-point battle until Butler scored two straight to take the 15-14 lead.
- The Bulldog lead was capped at four (21-17) after the Friars scored three straight points to close the lead to one (21-20).
- Butler responded with four-consecutive kills to take the match.
- Ruggles notched a team-best seven assists. Mullally and Pokrzywa combined for six more.
- Nelson hit a perfect 1.00, notching five kills on five attempts.
MATCH NOTES:
- Mullally posted a double-double with a team-best 13 kills and 14 assists.
- Grant led the Friars in kill percentage, hitting .538 on 13 attempts.
- The Friars notched 43 total kills and 68 total digs.
