PROVIDENCE, R.I.- The Providence College volleyball team defeated the Saint Peter's Peacocks in straight sets (25-15, 25-18, 25-22) to open the 16
th Annual Friar Volleyball Classic.
FIRST SET HIGHLIGHTS- Providence won the first set, 25-15. Providence held the lead wire to wire.
Elena Leontaridou (Thessaloniki, Greece) recorded five kills on eight total attacks.
Allison Barber (Woodbury, Minn.) led the Friars with 16 assists.
Shaliyah Rhoden (Rowlett, Texas) had a set-high .800 hitting percentage with four kills on five total attacks.
Mackenzie Taylor (Holbrook, N.Y.) tallied a set-high seven digs.
SECOND SET HIGHLIGHTS- Friars took the second set, 25-18. After the score was tied 2-2, the Friars led for the remainder of the set.
Maryanne Boyle (Blacklick, Ohio) had a set-high three kills on five total attacks.
Sammie Ruggles (North Olmsted, Ohio) tallied a set-high 10 assists.
Caroline LaMacchia (Rockville Center, N.Y.) and
Natalie Benson (Bourbonnais, Ill.) registered a team-high four digs.
THIRD SET HIGHLIGHTS- Providence came back in the set to win, 25-23.
Rhoden registered a set-high six kills on 13 total attacks with a .385 hitting percentage.
Ruggles recorded 11 assists and two digs.
Taylor led the Friars in digs (five).
MATCH HIGHLIGHTS
As a team, the Friars recorded 45 attacks on 108 total attacks, 49 digs and 42 assists.
Ruggles recorded 21 assists and Taylor recorded 15 digs, both match-highs.
Rhoden registered a match-high 12 kills on 23 total attacks and a .478 hitting percentage.
The Friars held the Peacocks to a .078 hitting percentage.
WHAT'S NEXT: The Friars will play two matches tomorrow [Sept. 11] in the final day of the 16
th Annual Friar Volleyball Classic in Providence, R.I. Providence will take on Binghamton University at 1:30 p.m., before concluding the tournament against Fairleigh Dickinson University at 5:30 p.m.
