PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College women's volleyball team defeated intrastate rival University of Rhode Island, 3-2, (25-23, 22-25, 25-20, 18-25, 15-12) on Tuesday, August 31. With the win, the Friars improve 3-1 on the season.
FIRST SET HIGHLIGHTS: Providence took the first set, 25-23.
Providence sophomore
Maryanne Boyle (Blacklick, Ohio) tallied five kills.
Graduate student
Allison Barber (Woodbury, Minn.) notched 11 assists and added three digs for the Friars.
Natalie Benson (Bourbonnais, Ill.) paced the Friars defensively with a set-high eight digs.
The Friars tallied four team blocks.
SECOND SET HIGHLIGHTS: The Rhode Island Rams took set two, 22-25.
Boyle,
Emma Nelson (West Chester, Pa.), and
Shaliyah Rhoden (Rowlett, Texas) put up two kills apiece.
Barber contributed six assists and three digs.
Mackenzie Taylor (Holbrook, N.Y.) matched Barber's three digs.
THIRD SET HIGHLIGHTS: Providence rebounded with a 25-20 win in the third set, carrying the lead from wire to wire.
Rhoden led Providence's attack with four kills.
Barber helped out offense with 12 assists, leading all players in the set.
Jennifer Leitman (Irvine, Calif.) and Taylor had six digs each.
The Friars held the Rams to a .087 hitting percentage.
FOURTH SET HIGHLIGHTS: Providence fell short in the fourth set, 18-25.
Leitman tallied three kills and five digs.
Taylor had a strong defensive performance in the set, tallying a set-high six digs.
Barber notched seven assists for Providence.
FIFTH SET HIGHLIGHTS: Providence won the fifth set, 15-12.
Rhoden led the Friars on offense with three kills.
Barber led the set in assists again with six.
Caroline LaMacchia (Rockville Centre, N.Y. ) led the defense for the Friars with four digs.
MATCH NOTES:
As a team, the Friars recorded 51 kills on 164 total attacks, 48 assists, 82 digs and ten total team blocks.
Boyle notched a team-high 12 kills, hitting .259 on 27 total attacks. Rhoden followed closely behind with 11 kills.
Taylor finished the match with a team-high 19 digs.
Barber added 42 assists and 13 digs, earning her fourth double-double in four games played.
WHAT'S NEXT: The Friars will travel to Durham, N.H. for the Holly Young Tournament on September 3-4. Providence will play two matches on Friday, September 3 against Siena College (12:30 p.m.) and Fairleigh Dickinson University (3:30 p.m.), before playing host school, University of New Hampshire, on Saturday, September 4 (2:00 p.m.).
