Allison Barber and Shaliyah Rhoden named to All-Tournament Team.
PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College women's volleyball team defeated Iona College, 3-1, (25-16, 12-25, 25-16, 25-19) in the final game of the Army Invitational at West Point on Aug. 28. The Friars improved to 2-1 overall with the victory.
FIRST SET HIGHLIGHTS: Providence took set one, 25-16. The score was 16-14 before the Friars went on a 9-2 run to close the set.
Allison Barber (Woodbury, Minn.) led the Friars with 13 assists while Jennifer Leitman (Irvine, Calif.) paced Providence in digs (three).
Maryanne Boyle (Blacklick, Ohio) and Shaliyah Rhoden (Rowlett, Texas) led the Friars offensively with four kills apiece.
SECOND SET HIGHLIGHTS: Iona took the second set, 12-25.
Rhoden and Leitman each tallied two kills in the second set.
Mackenzie Taylor (Holbrook, N.Y.) added five digs for the Friars.
THIRD SET HIGHLIGHTS: The Friars won the third set, 25-16. With a close score of 17-14, the Friars finished off the set with an 8-2 scoring advantage.
Barber notched 10 assists for Providence, to go along with five digs.
Emma Fink (Western Springs, Ill.) led the Friars with five kills. Boyle added four kills for the Providence offense.
FOURTH SET HIGHLIGHTS: Providence led for the majority of the set and ultimately won, 25-19. The Friars got out to a healthy 17-9 lead and closed out the victory in the set to claim the match.
Rhoden recorded seven kills on 10 total attacks. Barber led the Friars with 15 assists and had a team-high seven digs in the set.
MATCH NOTES:
As a team, the Friars recorded 54 kills on 147 total attacks, 49 assists, 59 digs and five total team blocks.
Rhoden, a freshman, notched a team-high 15 kills, hitting .351 on 37 total attacks.
Barber and Taylor finished the match with 15 digs each.
Barber added 43 assists, earning her second double-double of the season in just three matches overall.
Barber and Rhoden each earned a spot on the All-Tournament Team.
WHAT'S NEXT: Providence will head to Kingston, R.I. for a single match against intrastate rival Rhode Island. The meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, Aug. 31 at 5:00 p.m.
