Providence, R.I. – The Providence College women's soccer team is set to open the 2021 season against Rhode Island on Thursday, Aug. 19 at 7:00 PM. The Friars open the season at the URI Soccer Complex, before returning to Chapey Field at Anderson Stadium.
Friars in 2020-21… The Friars finished with a 7-2-3 overall record and 5-2-3 mark in BIG EAST conference play. Providence finished third in the East Region of the BIG EAST.
The Friars earned three All-BIG EAST selections in 2020-21.
Alexis Rothmann earned All-BIG EAST First Team. Two Friars earned All- BIG EAST Second Team for the first time, grad student Christina Rogers and sophomore
Meg Hughes.
Friars Picked Fourth in the BIG EAST Preseason Coaches' Poll… The BIG EAST Conference announced its Women's Soccer Preseason Coaches' Poll on Thursday, August 12. The Friars were picked to finish fourth in the BIG EAST behind Georgetown, Butler and UConn.
Hughes was the lone Friar to receive preseason recognition as a member of the Preseason All-BIG EAST Team. Last season, Hughes played in all 12 games for the Friars and appeared in the starting lineup four times. She led Providence in points (14), assists (six) and was tied for first on the team in goals (four). At the conclusion of the season, she was named BIG EAST Freshman of the Year and earned a spot on the All-BIG EAST Second Team and BIG EAST All-Freshman Team.
Newcomers… Providence welcomes five freshmen to the squad this season. Incoming freshmen include
Gillian Kenney (Hanover, Mass.),
Victoria Bunz (Middleton, Wisc.),
Olivia Rodman (Canton, Mass.),
Maria Paveglio (Lake Orion, Mich.) and goalkeeper
Tobi Whitmore (Grand Blanc, Mich.).
Series History against Rhode Island… The Friars will face Rhode Island for the 30
th time in program history on Thursday, Aug. 19. Providence leads the all-time series with an 18-8-3 record against the Rams. The most recent result came as a 2-0 Friar win last season in Providence, R.I. on Feb. 14.
Scouting the Rams… In 2020-21, the team finished 2-8-2 overall. The Rams return leading scorer junior Brooke Cavino, who tallied 13 goals last season. There are seven newcomers joining the Rams this season.
