3/28/2021 2:45:00 PM | Field Hockey

Friars outshot Owls 11-5, but fall to Temple after giving up early goal in first quarter.

PHILADELPHIA, PA. – The Providence College field hockey team fell to Temple, 1-0, on March 28 in Philadelphia, Pa., despite holding the advantage in shots (11-5), shots on goal (5-3) and penalty corners (7-2). The Friars split the season series with the Owls, having defeated Temple yesterday [March 27] in a shootout (3-2).

The Friars fell behind early for the second-straight outing against Temple, giving up a goal to the Owls just 6:10 into the action. Cassie Romanczuk scored the goal and was assisted by Kaitlyn Cummins. The Owls held a 4-0 advantage in shots in the quarter and also earned one penalty corner.

Providence flipped the script in the second quarter, dominating play and outshooting the Owls, 7-0, including five shots on target. The Friars also held a 3-0 advantage in offensive penalty corners.

The Friars were awarded a penalty-stroke at 28:53, with an opportunity to tie the game, but the bid by Lisa McNamara was saved by Temple's goalkeeper, Cristina Carotenuto. Temple took a 1-0 lead into halftime. At the break, Providence led in shots (7-4), shots on goal (5-3) and offensive penalty corners (3-1).

Play was evenly matched in the third quarter, with each team one shot and one corner. Temple maintained its 1-0 lead heading into the final 15 minutes of regulation.

Providence created a good scoring opportunity just seconds into the fourth quarter, as Niamh Gowing collected a turnover and fed the ball forward into the circle for Sydney Cramer. However, Cramer's bid was deflected wide by her defender.

The Friars outshot Temple 3-0 in the final quarter and also held a 3-0 advantage in corners, but could not find the equalizer. Both teams were assessed yellow cards late in the fourth, and played 10-vs-10 for the final two minutes of action.

For the game, Providence led in shots (11-5), shots on goal (5-3) and corners (7-2).

Camryn Kelbaugh recorded two saves for Providence, while Carotenuto notched five saves and a critical stop on the Friars' penalty-stroke attempt just before the half.

The Friars return to action next weekend with the final two games of the four-game series against Quinnipiac. Providence will host the Bobcats on Thursday, April 1 at 3:00 p.m., and then will travel to Hamden, Conn. for a 1:00 p.m. start on Saturday, April 3.
