PHILADELPHIA, PA. – The Providence College field hockey team overcame a 2-0 deficit to defeat Temple, 3-2, in a shootout on March 27 at Howarth Field in Philadelphia, Pa.
The Owls came out of the gate to score back-to-back goals at in the first three minutes of the game. Claire Thomas struck first, unassisted, at 2:15. Kaitlyn Cummins also tallied an unassisted goal 29-seconds later to put Temple up, 2-0.
Temple outshot Providence 6-1 in the first half and held a 1-0 edge in penalty corners.
In the second half, Providence found its stride and registered a 5-1 advantage in shots and a 4-0 edge in penalty corners. All five of the Friars shots and each of their four corners came in the pivotal fourth quarter, leading to goals by
Nora Goddard-Despot and
Amanda Collins. Goddard's goal was assisted by Collins at 50:20. Collins found the back of the cage to tie the game at 57:06 and was assisted by Goddard-Despot.
After two scoreless overtime sessions, the Friars pulled off the victory with a 3-1 advantage in the shootout.

Bella Carrozza and Collins each converted their shootout attempts to lift the Friars.
For the game, Providence led the way in penalty corners, 5-1, while Temple held a slight advantage in shots, 10-9.
Camryn Kelbaugh registered the victory for Providence in the cage with six saves. Cristina Carotenuto collected four saves for Temple.
The two teams will return to action tomorrow [March 28] at 1:00 p.m. in Philadelphia for the second game of the season series.
