Women’s Soccer Welcomes UConn To Anderson Stadium For The 2021 BIG EAST Opener

Kick-off is set for Thursday, Mar. 4 at 3:00 p.m. in Providence, R.I.

Providence, R.I.- The Providence College women's soccer team is set to host the UConn Huskies on Thursday, Mar. 4 at 3:00 p.m. at Chapey Field at Anderson Stadium in Providence, R.I. This marks the first BIG EAST conference match of the season for the Friars.
 
Friars All-Time Against Huskies… UConn holds a 28-3-1 advantage over Providence all-time. However, the Friars have taken two of the last three meetings between the two teams. In 2019, Providence defeated UConn, 2-1, on August 22, 2019. Hannah McNulty and Christina Rodgers scored for the Friars.
 
Shut-Out The Ocean State… Providence defeated Ocean State foes, Rhode Island and Bryant, by a combined 6-0 score in back-to-back matches to open the season.
 
Providence defeated Rhode Island, 2-0, in its season opener on Feb. 14. Senior Amber Birchwell (Mastic, N.Y.) and freshman Meg Hughes (Rochester, Mass.) each tallied a goal in the second half for the Friars. Freshman Emma Bodmer (Monroe Township, N.J.) registered three saves in her first career start and shut-out in a Friars uniform.
 
Providence defeated Bryant, 4-0, on Sunday, Feb. 21. Kyla Gallagher (Farmington, Conn.), Anna Kalooski (Greene, R.I.), Samantha Adams (Northport, N.Y.) and Hannah McNulty (Warwick, R.I.) each tallied second-half goals for the Friars. Emma Bodmer (Monroe Township. N.J.) and Sam Murray (Medway, Mass.) combined for the shut-out. Bodmer has not allowed a goal this season in 166:26 minutes of action, while Murray has held opponents scoreless for 13:32.
 
Awards All Around… Bodmer, Rothmann and Gallagher were named to BIG EAST Weekly Awards (2/22) following their performances against Bryant. Bodmer was named BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Week and Alexis Rothmann (Norwell, Mass.) was named BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week. Additionally, Kyla Gallagher was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll.
 
Bodmer, Birchwell and Hughes all earned BIG EAST Weekly Awards (2/15) following their performances against Rhode Island. Bodmer was named BIG EAST Goalkeeper on the Week, while Birchwell and Hughes were BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll honorees.
 
Scouting the Huskies… UConn enters the BIG EAST opener with a 2-0 record. The Huskies defeated Rhode Island (2-0) and Northeastern (2-0). The Huskies were picked to finish fourth in the BIG EAST Conference East Division.
 
Lucy Cappadona leads the Huskies in goals (two) and points (four). Yamilee Eveillard is first on the team in assists (two). Randi Palacios has recorded three saves in back-to-back shutouts to open the year. Palacios was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll on Mar. 1 for her performance against Northeastern.

Friars Picked Third in the BIG EAST Preseason Coaches' Poll East Division… The BIG EAST Conference announced its Women's Soccer Preseason Coaches' Poll on Monday, Feb. 1. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the BIG EAST has split into two divisions for the upcoming season. The East Division is comprised of: Georgetown, Villanova, Providence, UConn, St. John's and Seton Hall. The MidWest Division is: Xavier, DePaul, Butler, Marquette and Creighton. The Friars were picked to finish third among 6 BIG EAST schools behind Georgetown and Villanova. 
 
McNulty was the lone Friar to receive preseason recognition. McNulty was a unanimous selection on the Preseason-All BIG EAST Team. She started all 20 games for the Friars last season. She led the team in points (18) and goals (nine), including four game-winners. McNulty went on to earn All-BIG EAST First-Team honors at the conclusion of the season.

Newcomers… The Friars welcome eight freshman and two transfers to the squad. Incoming freshman include Emma Bodmer (Monrow Township, N.J.), Emily McCalligett (Warwick, R.I.), Meg Hughes (Rochester, Mass.), Anna Kalooski(Greene, R.I.), Avery Snead (Wrentham, Mass.), Kyla Gallagher (Farmington, Conn.), Grace Murphy (Penfield, N.Y.) and Samantha Adams (Northport, N.Y.). Esther Rønn (Copenhagen, Denmark) joins the Friars after spending a year at the University of Copenhagen while Sara Vijfhuizen (Bilthoven, The Netherlands) transferred from NAIA's University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma. Both transfers have three years of eligibility.

Up Next… The Friars hit the road for the first time in the 2020-21 season. Providence travels to Washington, D.C. to take on Georgetown on Sunday, Mar. 7. Kick-off is set for 1:00 p.m.
