PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College field hockey team will face BIG EAST foes Quinnipiac and Connecticut this weekend. The Friars travel to Hamden, Conn. to take on the Bobcats at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, March 5, before returning home to Lennon Family Field in Providence to face the UConn Huskies for a second time this season on Sunday, March 7 (1:00 p.m.). Providence is scheduled to face Quinnipiac and Connecticut four times each this season, as part of the BIG EAST regional format for field hockey.
SCOUTING PROVIDENCE (0-1):
• The Friars enter the weekend with an 0-1 record, having dropped a 4-0 decision to Connecticut in the 2021 season opener on Feb. 28 in Storrs, Conn.
• The Friars were picked to finish fourth in the 2020-21 Preseason BIG EAST Coaches' Poll.
•
Camryn Kelbaugh (Hampstead, Md.) made her debut in the starting line-up for the Friars at goalkeeper and recorded six saves.
• UConn held a 10-1 advantage in shots on goal and a 10-0 edge in penalty corners in the game. The Huskies were led by Jess Dembrowski's two goals, while Sophie Hamilton added one goal and two assists.
• Senior midfielder
Maddie Babineau (Milton, Ontario) was named a unanimous selection to the Preseason All-BIG EAST Team. Last season, she tallied eight points on two goals and four assists.
• The Friars' leading returning scorers are senior forward
Olivia Ward (Havelock North, New Zealand) and junior forward
Niamh Gowing (Dublin, Ireland). Ward finished with 10 points on five goals, while Gowing notched 10 points on four goals and two assists.
• Providence lost its top two scorers from a season ago in All-BIG EAST selections
Izzy Mendez (20 points) and
Mary O'Reilly (16 points).
• The Friars also lost goalkeeper
Lydia Rice, who now serves as a graduate assistant coach for the program. Rice spent the last two seasons as a starter for the Friars and is a two-time All-BIG EAST selection. She completed the 2019 campaign with a 1.30 goals against average, 0.748 save percentage and six shut-out victories. She also was named to the BIG EAST All-Tournament Team in 2019.
• Providence finished the 2019 campaign with a 12-7 overall record and a 4-3 mark in BIG EAST play (fourth place).
• Providence was ranked as high as No. 25 in the Penn Monto/NFHCA Division I National Coaches' Poll, where it remained for four-straight weeks to end the regular-season.
• Providence qualified for the BIG EAST Tournament in 10 of the last 14 seasons, including an active streak of four-straight appearances from 2016-2019. Providence, Connecticut and Liberty are the only teams to have qualified for each of the last four BIG EAST Tournaments.
• Providence and Quinnipiac met once during the 2019 season, and the Friars claimed a 3-2 victory in a shootout. The Bobcats took a 2-1 lead in the fourth quarter (48:59). The Friars tied the game just under a minute later as
Allyson Parker converted a penalty stroke. The match proceeded through two scoreless overtime periods and the Friars prevailed in the shootout.
• Providence and Connecticut met twice last season. During the regular-season, UConn took a 3-0 victory in Storrs, Conn. on Oct. 11, 2019. The two teams met for a second time in the semifinal round of the BIG EAST Tournament. The Huskie claimed a 2-0 victory in that game on Nov. 8 in Hamden, Conn.
SCOUTING QUINNIPIAC (0-0):
• Friday's game marks the season-opener for Quinnipiac.
• The Bobcats finished the 2019 season with a 5-13 overall record and a 2-5 mark in BIG EAST play.
• Quinnipiac was picked to finish sixth in the 2020-21 BIG EAST Preseason Coaches' Poll.
• Julianna Cappello is the Bobcats' leading returning scorer from 2019. She finished the season with 12 points on six goals.
• Quinnipiac lost three of its top-four scorers from a season ago, including Bianka Strubbe's team-best 21 points (9 goals, 3 assists).
SCOUTING CONNECTICUT (2-0):
• Connecticut enters Sunday's game against Providence with a 2-0 record.
• The Huskies defeated Hofstra, 5-0, in the season opener and followed with a 4-0 win over Providence on Feb. 28.
• UConn was picked to win the BIG EAST title this season in the 2020-21 BIG EAST Preseason Coaches' Poll.
• Through two games, seven players have cracked the scoring column, led by Sophie Hamilton's nine points (3 goals, 3 assists). Jessica Dembrowski and Kourtney Kennedy each have five points on the season.
