Field Hockey Falls To Quinnipiac, 2-1

Hamden, Conn,- The Providence College field hockey team fell to BIG EAST foe, Quinnipiac, 2-1 on March 5 in Hamden, Conn. It marked the season opener for the Bobcats, while the Friars dropped to 0-2 on the year.

FIRST QUARTER:
-The first quarter ended scoreless, 0-0.

-Both teams recorded two shots each.

-Camryn Kelbaugh (Hampstead, Md.) registered one save in the quarter.

SECOND QUARTER:

-At the 18:32 mark, Quinnipiac's Jess Halley passed to Olivia Howard off of a penalty corner who scored the first goal of the game to put the Bobcats ahead, 1-0.

-Quinnipiac entered halftime leading 1-0.

-Providence outshot Quinnipiac 4-2 in the quarter.

-Sophia Pompeo (Portland, Maine) and Maddie Babineau (Grimsby, Ontario) each tallied shots on goal in the quarter.

THIRD QUARTER:

- The third quarter was scoreless and Quinnipiac maintained its 1-0 lead.

- Neither team recorded a shot in the quarter.

FOURTH QUARTER:

- At 48:01, Niamh Gowing (Dublin, Ireland) redirected a shot from Babineau to tie the game, 1-1.

- Quinnipiac responded at 54:39 when Julianna Cappello scored off of her own rebound to put the Bobcats ahead.

-Quinnipiac held on to win, 2-1.

-Providence outshot Quinnipiac 3-2 in the quarter.

-Providence earned two corners in the final frame.

NOTES / HIGHLIGHTS:

-Gowing's goal was the first of the year and fifth of her career.

-Kelbaugh recorded two saves on the day.

-Friday's game marks one of four games between Providence and Quinnipiac in this spring's shortened season that features a regional format for BIG EAST play.

WHAT'S NEXT:
• The Friars return to action on Sunday, March 7 against BIG EAST foe Connecticut. The game will be played in Providence, R.I. and is scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m.

The Friars fell to Connecticut, 4-0, in the first meeting on Feb. 28.
