PROVIDENCE TO FACE NO. 3-SEED GEORGETOWN IN NCAA THIRD ROUND... Providence College will travel to Washington, D.C. to face No. 3-seed Georgetown in the Third Round of the NCAA Tournament.
FRIARS TAKE DOWN DEFENDING NATIONAL CHAMPION AND 14TH-SEEDED MARSHALL IN NCAA SECOND ROUND
The Providence College men's soccer team defeated defending National Champion and 14th seeded Marshall, 2-1, in double overtime in the NCAA Second Round on Nov. 21.
Miguel Candela scored his second goal of the season in the 85th minute to tie the game, 1-1, and force overtime. The game remained tied after the first 10 minute session, before Davis Smith notched the golden goal in the 104th minute off a feed from Brendan McSorley.
Providence held a 10-8 advantage in shots, including an 8-4 edge during the second half and two overtimes. The Friars also led in corner kicks, 7-3. The two teams were even in shots on goals, 4-4.
Lukas Burns collected three saves in goal for Providence, while his counterpart Oliver Semmle made two saves.
PROVIDENCE SNAPS MARSHALL'S 22-GAME UNBEATEN STREAK AT HOOPS FAMILY FIELD... The Friars' victory in the Second Round snapped Marshall's 22-game unbeaten streak at Hoops Family Field in Huntington, West Virginia, during which Marshall posted a 17-0-5 record. The streak dated back to Sept. 17, 2019 when the Herd fell to Texas Rio Grande Valley, 3-2.
FRIARS DISPATCH MAAC CHAMPION MARIST IN NCAA FIRST ROUND
The defeated 2021 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Champion Marist, 2-0, in the NCAA Tournament First Round on Thursday, Nov. 18 Anderson Stadium in Providence, R.I. Christopher Roman and Armaan Wilson each scored a goal for Providence. Wilson's goal marked the first of his career and he added an assist for a career-best three points. Lukas Burns earned his seventh clean sheet of the year in goal with one save.
11TH APPEARANCE ALL-TIME IN NCAA TOURNAMENT
The Providence Friars have qualified for the NCAA Tournament 11 times in program history and are in the midst of their fifth appearance under the direction of 10th-year Head Coach Craig Stewart.
Providence has posted an all-time record of 13-10-1 in NCAA Tournament action, including an 10-4-1 mark with Stewart at the helm. Providence has defeated Marist (2-0) and No. 14-seed Marshall (2-1, 2OT) in this year's tournament.
FRIARS VS. GEORGETOWN ALL-TIME
Providence trails the all-time series against Georgetown 14-20-4. The two teams will meet for the third time during the 2021 falls season, having split the previous two matches.
2021 REGULAR-SEASON MEETING
The Friars defeated the Hoyas, 3-0, during their regular-season match-up on Oct. 13 in Providence, R.I. by a score of 3-0. The Hoyas entered that game unbeaten and ranked No. 1 in the nation.
Providence held the edge in shots (10-7) and shots on goal (6-2), while the Hoyas recorded a 5-3 advantage in corner kicks.
Luis Garcia scored two goals and added an assist for a career-high five points. Simon Triantafillou scored his lone goal of the season during the match. Lukas Burns collected two saves in the shut-out victory.
2021 BIG EAST CHAMPIONSHIP GAME
Providence and Georgetown met for a second time in 2021 on Nov. 14 in the BIG EAST Championship Game at Shaw Field in Washington, D.C. The Hoyas earned a 2-1 victory in overtime.
Stefan Stojanovic gave Georgetown a 1-0 lead in the 52nd minute on a penalty kick.
Brendan McSorley scored the equalizer for Providence in the 85th minute and was assisted by Paulo Lima and Gil Santos.
Stojanovic scored the golden goal in the 96th minute to give the Hoyas the OT victory and BIG EAST title.
Lukas Burns made seven saves for Providence, while Giannis Nikopolidis collected three saves for Georgetown.
SURVIVE AND ADVANCE
The Friars have advanced to the NCAA Round of 16 for the fourth times in program history (2014, 2016, 2019 2021). Additionally, Providence has made two Quarterfinal appearances (2014, 2016) and a trip to the College Cup Semifinals (2014).
FRIARS ADVANCED TO THE COLLEGE CUP SEMIFINAL IN 2014
The Friars' most notable run in the NCAA's came during the 2014 campaign when the squad advanced to the College Cup Semifinal. That year, Providence earned a bye in the First Round and went on to defeat Dartmouth in the Second Round (3-0), UC Irvine in the Third Round (1-0) and Michigan State in the Quarterfinals (3-2). The Friars' magical run came to an end in the semifinals against UCLA, 3-2, in double-overtime.
FRIARS IMPROVED TO 7-0 AT HOME IN THE NCAA TOURNAMENT ALL-TIME
Providence improved to 7-0 at home during the NCAA Tournament, including a 3-0 mark at Anderson Stadium, with its First Round victory over Marist on Nov. 18. Head Coach Craig Stewart has guided Providence to a 5-0 mark in NCAA Tournament games played on the Friars' campus.
HOME-SWEET-HOME
Providence was unbeaten at home during the 2021 regular-season schedule, having claimed a 7-0-2 record on Chapey Field at Anderson Stadium.
SCOUTING PROVIDENCE
The Friars enter the Third Round of the NCAA Tournament with an 12-4-4 overall record.
The Friars were ranked No. 18 in the final regular-season United Soccer Coaches' Poll released on Nov. 9. Providence was ranked inside the top-25 of the United Soccer Coaches Poll for eight-consecutive weeks to close the regular season.
Providence entered the NCAA Tournament as an unseeded at-large selection.
Providence finished second in the BIG EAST final standings and earned the No. 2 seed in the 2021 BIG EAST Tournament with a 5-2-3 mark.
Providence advanced to the BIG EAST Championship Game for the sixth time in program history on Nov. 14 in Washington, D.C. The Friars fell to top-seeded Georgetown, 2-1, in overtime. The Friars were ranked 18th in the nation at the time of play, while the Hoyas checked in at No. 7.
All four of the Friars' losses this season have come on the road, at Butler (2-1), at New Hampshire (2-1), at Creighton (2-1) and most recently at Georgetown in the BIG EAST Championship game (2-1, OT).
FRIARS ARE 11-0-1 WHEN SCORING TWO-OR-MORE GOALS
Providence has posted a 11-0-1 record when scoring two-or-more goals in a game. Additionally, the Friars are 7-0 when scoring three-or-more goals. The Friars scored a season-high six goals against Saint Peter's on Aug. 29.
POTENT OFFENSE
Providence ranks inside the top-20 among NCAA Division I soccer programs in several offensive categories: 18th in total goals (41), 16th in total points (124) and 15th in total assists (42). Additionally, the Friars rank 27th in the nation in points per game (6.20) and 28th in scoring offense (2.05).
BALANCED ATTACK
Fourteen different players on the roster have scored at least one goal, and 10 of those 14 players are multi-goal scorers.
SECOND HALF SURGE
Providence has scored 29 of its 41 goals this season during the second half.
FRIARS VS. RANKED OPPONENTS
Providence has earned a 4-2-0 record vs. nationally ranked opponents. The Friars' only losses vs. ranked foes came against then-No. 14 New Hampshire, 2-1 (Sept. 3) and then-No. 7 Georgetown, 2-1 (OT) on Nov. 14. The Friars recently defeated defending National Champion Marshall in the NCAA Second Round, 2-1, in double-overtime. Marshall was ranked No. 4 in the final regular-season United Soccer Coaches' Poll released on Nov. 9 and earned the No. 14 seed in the NCAAs.
FRIARS IN OVERTIME
Providence has posted a 2-1-4 record this season in overtime, including a 1-0-3 mark during BIG EAST regular-season play.
PLAYERS TO WATCH
Brendan McSorley leads the team in scoring with 19 points on eight goals and three assists. Three of his eight goals have been game winners. He's registered at least one point in three of the Friars' last four games. He scored a goal in the BIG EAST Semifinal vs. Butler (Nov. 11) and the BIG EAST Championship Game against Georgetown (Nov. 14). He tallied an assist on the golden goal in Providence's NCAA Second Round victory over Marshall (Nov. 21).
Luis Garcia ranks second on the team in scoring with 15 points on five goals and five assists. He assisted on Brendan McSorley's game-winning goal in the BIG EAST Semifinal vs. Butler, having served a ball into the box during a corner kick in the 64th minute of play.
Davis Smith has recorded 14 points on five goals and four assists. He was responsible for the Friars' game-winning goal in double-overtime against Marshall on Nov. 21.
Paulo Lima (12 points) and Gevork Diarbian (10 points) round out the list of Friars in double digit points. Lima has collected four goals and four assists, while Diarbian owns three goals and four assists. Diarbian scored a goal in the Friars' NCAA First Round victory against Marist.
Simon Triantafillou leads the team in assists (six) and has scored one goal on the year for eight points. He picked up his sixth assist in the Friars' BIG EAST Semifinal win over Butler on Nov. 11.
Armaan Wilson burst on to the scene for the Friars in the NCAA First Round against Marist with his first career goal. He also added an assist in the match to collect a career-high three points.
Lukas Burns has played 1884 minutes in goal for Providence and owns a 0.91 goals against average and a 0.753 save percentage. He has been the goalkeeper of record in each match this season (12-4-4) and has recorded seven clean sheets, including six shut-out victories.
CRAIG STEWART COLLECTS 100TH CAREER WIN AT PROVIDENCE COLLEGE
Craig Stewart is in the midst of his 10th-year at Providence College and recorded his 100th career win with the Friars on Nov. 11 vs. Butler. He enters Sunday's match at Georgetown with a 102-65-23 record as head coach at Providence. Before taking over the Friars' program in 2012, he spent three seasons as head coach at Franklin Pierce (51-8-6). In 13 years overall as a head coach, Stewart has posted a record of 153-73-29.
SCOUTING GEORGETOWN
Georgetown claimed the No. 3 seed in the NCAA Tournament and earned a bye into the Second Round. The Hoyas defeated Georgia State, 2-0, on Nov. 21.
The Hoyas are unbeaten this season at Shaw Field (11-0).
Stefan Stojanovic leads the Hoyas with 19 points on nine goals and one assist. Dante Polvara is second in scoring with 16 points on five goals and a team-best six assists. Zach Riviere owns 11 points on four goals and three assists.
Giannis Nikopolidis has played 1086 minutes in goal for Georgetown and has registered a 0.75 goals against average and a 0.757 save percentage. He has been the goalkeeper of record in 12 matches (11-1) and has posted five shutouts.

WHAT'S NEXT
The winner of Sunday's Third Round match between Providence and Georgetown will advance to the NCAA Quarterfinals, to face the winner of No. 11 seed West Virginia vs. No. 6-seed Tulsa. The Quarterfinals are scheduled are scheduled to be played Dec. 3-4.
WVU and Tulsa will play on Nov. 27 at 8:00 p.m. in Tulsa, Okla.
