Friars will face defending National Champion Marshall on Sunday, Nov. 21 at 1:00 p.m.

FRIARS SET TO FACE #14 MARSHALL IN NCAA SECOND ROUND

The Providence College men's soccer team will travel to Huntington, West Virginia to face No. 14 Marshall on Sunday, Nov. 21 in the Second Round of the NCAA Tournament. Kickoff is set for 1:00 p.m. at Hoops Family Field.

FRIARS DISPATCH MAAC CHAMPION MARIST IN NCAA FIRST ROUND

The defeated 2021 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Champion Marist, 2-0, in the NCAA Tournament First Round on Thursday, Nov. 18 Anderson Stadium in Providence, R.I. Christopher Roman and Armaan Wilson each scored a goal for Providence. Wilson's goal marked the first of his career and he added an assist for a career-best three points. Lukas Burns earned his seventh clean sheet of the year in goal with one save.

11TH APPEARANCE ALL-TIME IN NCAA TOURNAMENT

Providence is making its 11th appearance all-time in the NCAA Tournament and fifth under the direction of 10th-year Head Coach Craig Stewart. Providence has posted an all-time record of 12-10-1 in NCAA Tournament action, including an 9-4-1 mark with Stewart at the helm, including Thursday's victory over Marist.

SURVIVE AND ADVANCE

In its previous 10 trips to the NCAAs, Providence has advanced to the Round of 16 three times (2014, 2016, 2019), including two Quarterfinal appearances (2014, 2016) and a trip to the College Cup Semifinals (2014).

FRIARS ADVANCED TO THE COLLEGE CUP SEMIFINAL IN 2014

The Friars' most notable run in the NCAA's came during the 2014 campaign when the squad advanced to the College Cup Semifinal. That year, Providence earned a bye in the First Round and went on to defeat Dartmouth in the Second Round (3-0), UC Irvine in the Third Round (1-0) and Michigan State in the Quarterfinals (3-2). The Friars' magical run came to an end in the semifinals against UCLA, 3-2, in double-overtime.

FRIARS ARE 7-0 AT HOME IN THE NCAA TOURNAMENT ALL-TIME

Providence improved to 7-0 at home during the NCAA Tournament, including a 3-0 mark at Anderson Stadium, with its victory over Marist on Nov. 18. Head Coach Craig Stewart has guided Providence to a 5-0 mark in NCAA Tournament games played on the Friars' campus.

HOME-SWEET-HOME

Providence is unbeaten at home during the 2021 regular-season schedule, having claimed a 7-0-2 record on Chapey Field at Anderson Stadium. 

SCOUTING PROVIDENCE

The Friars enter the Second Round of the NCAA Tournament with an 11-4-4 overall record. 

Providence finished second in the BIG EAST final standings and earned the No. 2 seed in the 2021 BIG EAST Tournament with a 5-2-3 mark.

Providence advanced to the BIG EAST Championship Game for the sixth time in program history on Nov. 14 in Washington, D.C. The Friars fell to top-seeded Georgetown, 2-1, in overtime. The Friars were ranked 18th in the nation at the time of play, while the Hoyas checked in at No. 7.

The last United Soccer Coaches Poll was released on Nov. 9 ahead of the BIG EAST Tournament. The Friars were ranked No. 18 in the national poll. Providence was ranked inside the top-25 of the United Soccer Coaches Poll for eight-consecutive weeks during the season.

All four of the Friars' losses this season have come on the road, at Butler (2-1), at New Hampshire (2-1), at Creighton (2-1) and most recently at Georgetown in the BIG EAST Championship game (2-1, OT).

FRIARS ARE 10-0-1 WHEN SCORING TWO-OR-MORE GOALS

Providence has posted a 10-0-1 record when scoring two-or-more goals in a game. Additionally, the Friars are 7-0 when scoring three-or-more goals. The Friars scored a season-high six goals against Saint Peter's on Aug. 29. 

FRIARS OFFENSE TOPS THE BIG EAST AND INSIDE TOP-30 AMONG NCAA DIVISION I SOCCER PROGRAMS

The Friars lead the BIG EAST in multiple offensive categories and also ranks among the top-30 in the nation. Providence ranks 25th in the nation in points per game (6.26), 27th in scoring offense (2.05), 23rd in total goals (39), 17th in total points (119). and 14th among NCAA Division I soccer programs in total assists (41).

BALANCED ATTACK 

Fourteen different players on the roster have scored at least one goal, and nine of those 14 players are multi-goal scorers.

 

SECOND HALF SURGE

Providence has scored 28 of its 39 goals this season during the second half. 

FRIARS VS. RANKED OPPONENTS

Providence has earned a 3-2-0 record vs. nationally ranked opponents. The Friars' only losses vs. ranked foes came against then-No. 14 New Hampshire, 2-1 (Sept. 3) and then-No. 7 Georgetown, 2-1 (OT) on Nov. 14.

FRIARS IN OVERTIME

Providence has posted a 1-1-4 record this season in overtime, including a 1-0-3 mark during BIG EAST regular-season play. 

PLAYERS TO WATCH

Brendan McSorley leads the team in scoring with 18 points on eight goals and two assists. Three of his eight goals have been game winners. Most recently, he scored a goals in the BIG EAST Semifinal and in the Final. 

Luis Garcia ranks second on the team in scoring with 15 points on five goals and five assists. He assisted on Brendan McSorley's game-winning goal in the BIG EAST semifinal vs. Butler, having served a ball into the box during a corner kick in the 64th minute of play.

Paulo Lima (12 points) and Davis Smith (10 points) round out the list of players in double-digit points. Lima owns four goals and four assists, while Smith has collected three goals and four assists.

Gevork Diarbian, who scored a goal in the NCAA First Round against Marist, also checks in with 10 points on three goals and four assists..

Simon Triantafillou leads the team in assists (six) and has scored one goal on the year for eight points. He picked up his sixth assist in the Friars' semifinal win over Butler on Nov. 11.

Armaan Wilson burst on to the scene for the Friars in the NCAA First Round against Marist with his first career goal. He also added an assist in the match to collect a career-high three points.

Lukas Burns has played 1781 minutes in goal for Providence and owns a 0.91 goals against average and a 0.753 save percentage. He has been the goalkeeper of record in each match this season (11-4-4) and has recorded seven clean sheets, including six shut-out victories.

BIG EAST ALL-TOURNAMENT HONORS

Brendan McSorley (2g), Gevork Diarbian (1g) and goalkeeper Lukas Burns were named to the BIG EAST All-Tournament Team on Nov. 14, following the Friars' run to the BIG EAST Championship Game.

SCOUTING MARSHALL

Marshall is on a two-match losing skid, its first since 2018, falling at No. 19 FIU to end the regular season and then to Florida Atlantic in the semifinal round of the C-USA Tournament. The Herd was one of four teams from C-USA to earn a spot in the NCAA Tournament.

The Herd has had 13 different players score a goal, including seven seven multi-goal scorers. Graduate student, and Conference USA Player of the Year, Pedro Dolabella leads the team with 10 goals and 26 total points. 

Vinicius Fernandes leads the team in assists (eight).

Marshall ranks 18th in the NCAA in scoring offense at 2.12 goals per game.

Oliver Semmle has played just over 1,500 minutes in goal and has eight clean sheets out of his 10 wins. He has a 1.07 goals against average and a .719 save percentage. Semmle and the defense went through a team record-breaking stretch earlier this season with seven-straight shutouts and going over 760 minutes without conceding a goal.

WHAT'S NEXT

The winner Sunday's NCAA Second Round match between Providence and No. 14 Marshall will advance to the Third Round to face the winner of No. 3 Georgetown and Georgia State. The match-up between the Hoyas and Panthers will take place on Sunday at 11:00 a.m. in Washington, D.C.
