HUNTINGTON, W. Va. – The Providence College men's soccer team defeated No. 14-seed Marshall, 2-1, in overtime on Nov. 21 in the Second Round of the NCAA Tournament.
Davis Smith scored the golden goal in the 104
th minute to take down the defending National Champions in Huntington, W. Va.

GAME FLOW
• Marshall created the first dangerous scoring opportunity in the 11
th minute as Alexander Adjetey rifled a left-footed shot off the left post.
• Less than two minutes later, Adjetey was alone on the left flank with only
Lukas Burns to beat, but sailed his shot high over the crossbar.
• The Friars earned their first set piece of the day in the 18
th minute.
Luis Garcia served the ball into the box and it was headed out, directly into the feet of
Miguel Candela. Candela's shot from outside the top of the box was saved by Marshall goalkeeper Oliver Semmle.
• The first 45 minutes of play was a scoreless draw (0-0).
• Burns and Semmle each made one save in goal for their respective teams during the first half.
• In the 50
th minute, Marshall earned its third corner kick of the game. Burns was well positioned at the far-right post, where Pedro Dolabella placed a header.
• Marshall scored in the 56
th minute to take a 1-0 lead as Adjetey converted a crossing pass from Milo Yosef on a counterattack.
• Prior to the goal,
Paulo Lima fed a pass to a streaking Candela at the left post, which was quickly scooped up by the goalkeeper and sent down the field for the counter.

Ramzi Qawasmy put a hard, low shot on target during a free kick in the 65
th minute. His effort was saved by a diving Semmle and the ball went out for a corner kick.
• Candela put a shot on target in the 74
th minute that
Brendan McSorley deflected underneath the crossbar, but McSorley was flagged for offsides.
• The Friars earned four corner kicks in a span of just over eight minutes, but the Friars were unable to find the equalizer.
• Candela finally got the Friars on the board in the 85
th minute to level the game, 1-1.
Gil Santos delivered a pass to the top of the box after a throw-in. Candela settled the ball and tucked his strike inside the right post.
• At the end of regulation, the Friars and Thundering Herd had each taken eight shots.
• Providence held a 6-3 advantage in corner kicks.
• Qawasmy was able to get a shot off during a corner kick in the 94
th minute, but the attempt was blocked by a defender and eventually collected by the goalkeeper.
• The two teams went to a second overtime with the match still tied, 1-1.
• Just 3:07 into the second OT, Smith scored the golden goal on diving header fed in by McSorley.
NOTES
• Providence will advance to the NCAA Third Round for the fourth time in program history (2014, 2016, 2019, 2021).
• Providence will face No. 3 seed Georgetown on Sunday, Nov. 28 at Noon at Shaw Field in Washington, D.C.
• Providence is 1-1 vs. the Hoyas this season. The Friars earned a 3-0 victory over the then-No. 1 Hoyas during the regular-season on Oct. 13. Georgetown earned a 2-1 overtime victory in the most recent meeting between the two teams on Nov. 14 in the BIG EAST Championship Game.
• The Friars handed Marshall their third-straight loss to end the season.
• Providence who was ranked No. 18 in the final regular-season United Soccer Coaches' Poll (Nov. 9), entered the NCAA Tournament unseeded. Marshall, who was ranked No. 4 in the national poll to end the regular season. The Thundering Herd earned the No. 14 seed in the NCAA Tournament.
• The Friars improved to 13-10-1 all-time in the NCAA Tournament, including a 10-4-1 mark under the direction of 10
th-year Head Coach
Craig Stewart.
• Candela earned his second goal of the season and first since Aug. 29 vs. Saint Peter's.
• Smith got his first game-winning goal of the season and fifth since joining the Friars in 2019.
• McSorley's assist marked his third of the season, increasing his point total to a team-best 19 (8g/3a).
• Burns finished the game with three saves, while his counterpart Semmle collected two saves.
• After 103:07 minutes of play, Providence led shots (10-8) and corner kicks (7-3). Both teams logged four shots on goal in the match.
• Marshall conceded more than a goal for just the fourth time this season.
• Providence improved to 11-0-1 when scoring two-or-more goals in a game.
