Women’s Soccer Set To Face St. John’s In BIG EAST Tournament First Round

Friars and Red Storm will kick-off at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 30 in Queens, N.Y.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College women's soccer team will face St. John's University in Queens, N.Y. on Sunday, Oct. 31 at 1:00 p.m. for the First Round of the 2021 BIG EAST Women's Soccer Tournament. The Friars beat the Seton Hall Pirates, 2-0, on Thursday Oct. 28 in the regular season finale and punched their ticket into the tournament.

FRIARS ENTER 2021 BIG EAST TOURNAMENT FIRST ROUND ACTION... The No. 5 seed Providence College women's soccer team enters BIG EAST Tournament action against No. 4 seed St. John's University. The match will be played at Belson Stadium in Queens, N.Y. on Sunday, Oct. 31. Opening kickoff is set for 1:00 p.m. and the match will be streamed on FloSports.

Overall Series: The Friars lead the series with a 17-16-5 record against the Red Storm.
 
SERIES HISTORY VS. ST. JOHN'S... Providence owns a 17-16-5 all-time record against the Red Storm. Over their last five matches, the Friars have posted a 2-1-2 record against St. John's. In the most recent meeting on Oct. 17, the Red Storm claimed a 1-0 victory in Queens, N.Y. St. John's scored its lone goal on a penalty kick. Providence led in shots (9-5), shots on goal (5-2), and corner kicks (7-0).
 
FRIARS AND THE RED STORM IN THE BIG EAST TOURNAMENT... Providence is 1-1 all-time vs. St. John's in the BIG EAST Tournament. The two teams faced each other in the First Round in 2016 and 2018. Both first round matches were decided by one goal. In 2018, Providence won 1-0, while St. John's won, 1-0, in 2016.
 
SCOUTING THE RED STORM... St. John's enters the BIG EAST Tournament as the No. 4 seed and holds a 10-5-2 overall record. The Red Storm have won four out of their last six matches and are coming off a 2-1 win against Villanova in the regular-season finale. Zsani Kajan leads the Red Storm in points (37) on 16 goals and five assists. She is one of three players to reach double figures in the scoring column, joined by Nicole Gordon and Jessica Garziano. Gordon owns 11 points on two goals and seven assists, while Garziano enters the tournament with 10 points on one goal and eight assists. Redshirt junior Naya Lipkens backs the Red Storm in goal with a .805 save percentage and 0.92 goals against average during the regular season.
 
PROVIDENCE'S HISTORY IN THE BIG EAST TOURNAMENT... Providence College captured the BIG EAST title in 1993 and has qualified for the BIG EAST Tournament play eight times, since the championship began in 1993. In 2019, the Friars fell in the BIG EAST Semifinals to Georgetown, 2-0. Providence 5-8-3 all-time in BIG EAST Tournament action.
 
HEAD COACH SAM LOPES IN THE BIG EAST TOURNAMENT... Eighth-year Head Coach Sam Lopes is 2-6-3 all-time at the BIG EAST Tournament. In each of the ties, the Friars advanced to the next round on penalty kicks during the 2015, 2017 and 2019 seasons. Lopes' two victories in the tournament came in 2018 with a 1-0 victory against St. John's in the First Round and in the First Round during the 2015 campaign, defeating DePaul 1-0 en route to the program's second appearance all-time in the championship game.
 
SIX OUT OF SEVEN APPEARANCES... The Friars have qualified for the BIG EAST Tournament six times in the past seven years (2014-2019). Providence fell short in the 2021 abbreviated spring season.
 
PLAYERS TO WATCH... Sophomore Meg Hughes (Rochester, Mass.) leads the Friars in scoring heading into the BIG EAST Tournament with 22 points on nine goals and four assists. Hughes ranks in the top-10 in six different statistical categories in the conference. Hughes ranks third in goals (nine) and goals per game (0.50), fifth in points (22) and points per game (1.22). She also ranks first in shots (70) and shots per game (3.89).
 
In addition to Hughes, the Friars have three more players in double figures in the scoring column. Freshman Gillian Kenney (Hanover, Mass.) has 12 points on four goals and four assists while fifth-year Amber Birchwell (Mastic, N.Y.) has scored 11 points on three goals and five assists. Sophomore Kyla Gallagher (Farmington, Conn.) has also reached double figures with 10 points on four goals and two assists.
 
BODMER IN NET... Sophomore Emma Bodmer (Monroe Township, N.J.) has played 1708:10 minutes in goal for the Friars and has posted six shut-out (4 SHO/2 CBO) victories on her way to a 10-5-3 record. She owns a 0.90 goals against average and a 0.795 save percentage.
 
ONE-GOAL GAMES... Eleven of the Friars' 18 matches this season have been decided by one goal or less, with three draws on their record. Four of the Friars last five games have been decided by one goal or less. Providence's most recent one-goal match resulted in a 1-0 double overtime victory against DePaul on Oct. 24.
 
BACK-TO-BACK WINS... Providence closed out the regular season earning back-to-back wins against DePaul and Seton Hall. The Friars beat the Blue Demons, 1-0, in double overtime on Oct. 24 in Chicago, Ill. Providence closed the regular season with a 2-0 win against Seton Hall on Thursday, Oct. 28 on Chapey Field at Anderson Stadium.
 
WHAT'S NEXT… The winner of Sunday's First Round game between Providence and St. John's will advance to the BIG EAST Semifinal Round to face top-seeded Xavier. The Semifinals and the Championship Game will be hosted by Xavier in Cincinnati, Ohio on Nov. 4 and Nov. 7.
