Women’s Basketball Defeats Georgetown In The BIG EAST First Round, 49-46

Providence takes on against top-seeded DePaul in the BIG EAST Quarterfinal on Saturday, March 7 at the Wintrust Arena in Chicago, Ill. Tip-off is set for 1:00 p.m. (ET).

CHICAGO, ILL. – The Providence College women's basketball team defeated Georgetown, 49-46, in the BIG EAST First Round on Friday, March 6 at the Wintrust Arena in Chicago, Ill. Alyssa Geary (Elmhurst, Ill.) led the Friars with 15 points, a career-high six blocks, six rebounds and one steal.
 
FIRST QUARTER:         
• Geary swished a three-pointer from an Andrea Cooper (Edmond, Okla.) cross-court pass to get the scoring started. Geary accounted for the Friars' first five points.
• Entering the media timeout, Providence held Georgetown to 1-10 shooting from the field.
• The Friars broke a 3-3 tie by going on a 7-0 run with buckets by Geary, Kaela Webb (Pontiac, Mich.) and Hevynne Bristow (Brooklyn, N.Y.)
• Providence led 14-6 after one quarter.
• Providence shot 56-percent (5-9) from the field, including 66.7-percent (2-3) from the three-point.
• Georgetown shot just 11-percent (2-18) from the field and 22-percent (2-9) from deep.
• Georgetown held an 11-10 advantage on the boards, including seven offensive rebounds.
 
SECOND QUARTER:
Kyra Spiwak (Arlington Heights, Ill.) drained a three-pointer from the right wing off a Cooper feed to give Providence its first double-digit lead of the game heading into the media timeout (17-6).
• Webb's sank a triple from the top of the arc with 1:37 remaining to end a four-minute scoring drought for Providence (20-11).
• The Friars entered halftime with a 20-16 lead. Georgetown outscored Providence 10-6 in the quarter.
• Webb led the Friars with six points on 2-2 shooting from deep.
• Geary produced in multiple ways for the Friars with five points, four blocks, three rebounds and one steal.
• Providence shot 30-percent (7-23) from the field, 57-percent (4-7) from deep and 50-percent (2-4) from the line.
• Providence held Georgetown to 13-percent (4-31) from the field.
 
THIRD QUARTER:
• Geary was the first Friar in double-figures after converting on a lay-up with 7:52 remaining. 
Chanell Williams (Bronx, N.Y.) scored on back-to-back possessions to push the Providence lead to nine (31-22).
• Cooper's lay-up with 3:13 left pushed the Friars back to a double-digit lead, 33-22.
• Georgetown ended the quarter on a 6-0 run, and Providence went into the final quarter with a five-point lead (35-30).
• Williams scored six points and Geary added five points in the quarter.
• Providence shot 29.4-percent (5-17) from the field, 25-percent (1-4) from deep and 100-percent (4-4) from the line.
 
FOURTH QUARTER:
• Georgetown cut the Providence lead to three with 7:48 remaining (39-36).
• Providence held Georgetown scoreless for over the next four minutes and built its lead back up to eight, 44-36. Georgetown's lone point was a free-throw by Taylor Barnes. 
• Georgetown did not record a field goal for over eight minutes. Georgetown's Barnes had a layup with 1:31 left to break the drought.
• Providence held on for win, 49-46.
 
NOTES / HIGHLIGHTS:
• Geary was the lone Friar in double-figures with a tied career-high (15). Geary anchored the defensive end with a career-high six blocks and tied the Friars' team-high with six rebounds and one steal.
• Williams had an all-around productive day with nine points, five rebounds and a team-best five assists.
Earlette Scott (Brooklyn, N.Y.) chipped in with seven points, six rebounds and a team-best three steals.
• Providence shot 36-percent (17-47) from the field, 50-percent (6-12) from deep and 64-percent (9-14) from the line.
• Providence had a strong team defensive effort as Georgetown shot 19-percent (12-63) from the field and 25-percent (7-28) from the three-point line.
• Providence has won a BIG EAST Tournament game in back-to-back seasons for the first time since 1994 and 1995. Last season, the Friars defeated Xavier in the First Round, snapping a 13-game winless streak in the tournament.
• Providence improves to 21-31 all-time in the BIG EAST Tournament.
• Providence captured its first win as the No. 8 seed in the BIG EAST Tournament (1-3).
• The Friars move to 6-1 all-time against the Hoyas in the BIG EAST Tournament.
• The win for Providence is the first back-to-back wins against Georgetown since the 2001 and 2002 season.

• Providence will advance to the BIG EAST Quarterfinal against top-seeded DePaul on Saturday, March 7 at the Wintrust Arena in Chicago, Ill. Tip-off is set for 1:00 p.m. (ET) on FS2.
