PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College volleyball team dropped its match to Villanova, 3-1, on Sunday, Sept. 29 in Alumni Hall. Villanova took the first two sets (25-23, 25-12) before Providence attempted to come back, winning the third set, 25-18. The Wildcats closed out the match in the fourth set, 25-20. Providence drops to 5-10 (0-2 BIG EAST) and the win boosts Villanova to 10-3 (1-1 BIG EAST).
FIRST SET HIGHLIGHTS: Providence started the set strong with an 11-5 lead, forcing a Villanova timeout. The Friars largest lead in the set was seven (16-9). Villanova went on a 10-3 run to tie the set (19-19). The remainder of the set went back and forth with Villanova's momentum carrying them to a 25-23 win in in the opening set.
Jennifer Leitman (Irvine, Calif.) recorded a set-high five kills on nine total attacks.
Allison Barber (Woodbury, Minn.) registered a set-high 12 assists.
SECOND SET HIGHLIGHTS: After being tied 4-4, Villanova went on a 12-2 run to create separation in the set (16-6). The Wildcats would keep the distance and go on to win the set, 25-12.
Leitman had a team-high three kills on nine total attacks.
Barber led the Friars with seven assists and three digs.
THIRD SET HIGHLIGHTS: The score was tied 5-5 before the Friars went on a 7-2 run to claim the lead (12-7). Villanova cut the lead down to one (17-16) but Providence would end the set with an 8-2 run to prevail, 25-18.
Brielle Mullally (Garden Grove, Calif.) paced the Friars with five kills on seven total attacks and a .714 hitting percentage.
Barber recorded a set-high 13 assists to go with three digs.
Natalie Benson (Bourbonnais, Ill.) tied Barber with a team-high three digs on the set.
As a team, the Friars had a .542 hitting percentage.
FOURTH SET HIGHLIGHTS: Villanova would go on a 6-1 run to break up a 5-5 tie and take control of the set (11-6). Providence responded with a 6-1 run of its own to tie the set, 12-12. The set was tied at 16 before Villanova went on a 5-0 run. The Wildcats would go on to take the set, 25-19.
Leitman led the Friars with five kills on 15 total attacks.
Barber and Mullally recorded six assists each.
Mullally and
Mackenzie Taylor (Holbrook, N.Y.) registered a team-high four digs.
MATCH HIGHLIGHTS:
Leitman paced the Friars with 15 kills on 40 total attacks.
Jenae Alderson (Brooklyn Park, Minn.) posted 10 kills on 15 total attacks and a .533 hitting percentage.
Barber had a match-high 38 assists to go with eight digs.
Benson paced the Friars with nine digs.
As a team, Providence tallied 48 kills on 125 total attacks, 47 assists, 47 digs and six total team blocks.
WHAT'S NEXT: The Friars hit the road to take on Seton Hall and St. Johns. Providence will play the Pirates on Friday, Oct. 4 at 7:00 p.m. followed by the Red Storm on Saturday, Oct. 5 at 1:00 p.m.
