Volleyball Falls To Seton Hall In Five Sets

The Friars will travel to Queens, N.Y. to take on St. John’s on Saturday, Oct. 5 at 1:00 p.m.

SOUTH ORANGE, N.J.- The Providence College volleyball team fell to Seton Hall in five sets, 25-21, 23-25, 23-25, 25-21, 13-15. The Friars drop to 5-11 overall, 0-3 in the BIG EAST. The Pirates recorded their first BIG EAST victory with tonight's win and improve to 6-11 overall.
 
FIRST SET HIGHLIGHTS: The beginning of the set went back and forth with multiple ties and lead changes. Providence broke the 12-12 tie with a small 3-0 run, forcing a Seton Hall timeout. The Pirates would get as close as one (16-15) in the set, but the Friars held the lead throughout the remainder of the set. Providence went on to take the set, 25-21.
 
Jenae Alderson (Brooklyn Park, Minn.) led the set with seven kills on nine total attacks with a .778 hitting percentage.
 
Allison Barber (Woodbury, Minn.) registered a team-high seven assists.
 
Mackenzie Taylor (Holbrook, N.Y.) recorded a set-high five digs.
 
SECOND SET HIGHLIGHTS: Following a 7-7 tie, the Pirates went on a 5-0 run to create separation from the Friars in the set. After Seton Hall led 16-10, Providence went on a pivotal 8-0 run to take the lead in the set. Seton Hall would battle back to tie the set late, 19-19. The Pirates would eventually win the set, 25-23.
 
Alderson tallied four attacks on six total attacks.
 
Barber recorded team-highs five assists and five digs.
 
Taylor joined Barber with a team-high five digs.
 
THIRD SET HIGHLIGHTS: The set was close throughout with Seton Hall's largest lead being three (15-12). The set would feature nine ties. Providence's largest lead was four, late in the set, 23-19. Seton Hall would battle back and end the set on a 6-0 run to claim the set, 25-23.
 
Barber had a tremendous set with six kills on seven total attacks with a .857 hitting percentage and eight assists.
 
Brielle Mullally (Garden Grove, Calif.) recorded a team-high three digs.
 
FOURTH SET HIGHLIGHTS: After the score was tied 11-11, the Friars would go on a 4-0 run to take the lead in the middle of the set. The Pirates would battle back to get the lead within one but the Friars held strong to maintain the lead throughout the remainder of the set. Providence won the fourth set, 25-21 to force the fifth set.
 
Addison Root (Wichita, Kan.) tallied a team high five kills on 11 total attacks.
 
Barber registered a team-high nine assists.
 
Jennifer Leitman (Irvine, Calif.) had four kills on ten total attacks with a team-high four digs.
 
FIFTH SET HIGHLIGHTS: The deciding set went back and forth with Providence entering the switch with a 8-7 lead. After an 8-8 tie, the Friars rattled off two straight points forcing a Pirates timeout. Out of the timeout, Seton Hall countered with a 4-0 run, forcing two Providence timeouts. Seton Hall would claim the set, 15-13 and the match.
 
Root came through with a set-high five kills on 12 total attacks with three digs.
 
Mullally had a team-high five assists.
 
Leitman lead the Friars with five digs.
 
MATCH HIGHLIGHTS:
 
Alderson registered a team-high 20 kills on 31 total attacks with a .581 hitting percentage.
 
Barber tallied her first triple-double of the year with 31 assists, 13 kills and 10 assists.
 
Leitman recorded her fourth double-double of the year with 14 kills and 10 digs.
 
Root claimed her fifth double-double of the year with 16 kills and a team-high 13 digs. Taylor also claimed a team-high 13 digs.
 
As a team, Providence had 70 kills on 168 total attacks, 67 digs, 66 assists and five total blocks.
 
WHAT'S NEXT: The Friars travel to Queens, N.Y. to take on St. John's on Saturday, Oct. 5 at 1:00 p.m. St. John's enters the match 9-7 overall, 1-2 in the BIG EAST. The Red Storm fell to the Creighton Bluejays on Friday, Oct. 3, 3-0.
