Volleyball Falls To St. John’s In Straight Sets

The Friars return to action next Friday, Oct. 11 at 8:00 p.m. against Marquette.

QUEENS, N.Y.- The Providence College volleyball team lost in straight sets to St. John's, 25-11, 25-20, 25-16. The Red Storm improve to 10-7 overall and 2-2 in the BIG EAST. The Friars dropped to 5-12 overall and 0-4 in BIG EAST play.
 
FIRST SET HIGHLIGHTS: The Friars fought tough in the beginning of the set to stay close with the Red Storm early. St. John's led, 9-7, and went on a 12-2 run to separate themselves from Providence (21-9). St. John's went on to win the first set, 25-11.
 
Allison Barber (Woodbury, Minn.) tied a team-high with two kills on four total attacks.
 
Brielle Mullally (Garden Grove, Calif.) registered two kills on four total attacks with three assists and two digs.
 
SECOND SET HIGHLIGHTS: The Friars led the majority of the beginning of the set, with their largest lead at 11-8. Providence tried to hold St. John's off but were unable to. The score was tied, 17-17, St. John's went on a 6-2 run to claim the lead late in the set. The Red Storm would hold off the Friars and win, 25-20.
 
Addison Root (Wichita, Kan.) led the Friars with three kills on six total attacks.
 
Four Friars recorded two kills on the set.
 
Barber had a team-high six assists and was one of three Friars with two digs.
 
THIRD SET HIGHLIGHTS: The Friars and Red Storm went back and forth to begin the set. The score was tied, 8-8, before St. John's went on a 7-2 run to take a 15-10 lead. Providence showed fight and cut the lead to two (17-15), but St. John's would finish the set and match on a 8-1 run to win, 25-16.
 
Root had a team-high four kills on seven attacks for a .571 hitting percentage along with three digs.
 
Barber and Mullally tallied three assists each.
 
Mackenzie Taylor (Holbrook, N.Y.) and Barber registered four digs each
 
MATCH HIGHLIGHTS:
 
Root paced the Friars' attack with seven kills on 20 total attacks along with five digs.
 
Barber and Mullally recorded 10 assists each.
 
Barber led the Friar defense with seven digs.
 
As a team, the Friars recorded 25 kills on 80 total attacks, 28 digs, 23 assists and six total team blocks.
 
WHAT'S NEXT: Providence will travel to Wisconsin and Illinois to take on Marquette and DePaul next week. The Friars face the Golden Eagles on Friday, Oct. 11 at 8:00 p.m. ET and the Blue Demons on Saturday, Oct. 12 at 7:00 p.m. ET.
