BOSTON, Mass.- The Providence College men's and women's cross-country teams competed at the Coast-to-Coast Battle in Beantown at Franklin Park against several nationally and regionally ranked teams. The Friar women finished eighth out of 22 teams (245 points) behind
Abbey Wheeler's second-straight victory for the season and at the Coast-to-Coast Battle in Beantown. The men finished 12th out of 21 teams (320 points).
On the women's side, Wheeler started the race strong as she was in the lead pack of five. With a mile to go, Wheeler along with two Syracuse runners broke away. On the last 200 meters and coming around the final bend before the straight-away to the finish line, Wheeler outkicked Syracuse's Amanda Vestri to claim back-to-back victories. Wheeler finished with a time of 17:03, a near seven second improvement from last year's victory and personal best at Franklin Park.
Fellow Friar
Maria Coffin (Annapolis, Md.) was not far behind the chase pack. Coffin maintained a top 15 position throughout the duration of the race. Coffin finished 12
th (17:40). Last year, Coffin finished the Battle in Beantown 28
th with a time of 17:52.1. Rounding out the top five were freshmen
Lilly Tuck (Sunderland, Canada),
Orla O'Connor (Waterford, Ireland) and sophomore
Hannah McReavy (Colorado Springs, Colo.).
For the men, the Friars were led by a 24
th place finish (24:53) by
David Rosas (Chestnut Ridge, N.Y.). Last season, Rosas finished the Battle in Beantown in 32
nd place.
Sean Meehan (East Greenwich, R.I.) finished 57
th overall (25:24). Rounding out the Friars top five were senior
Peter Rindfuss (Hamberg, N.Y.), junior
Ryan Gallagher (Briarcliff Manor, N.Y.) and sophomore
Marcus Kemp (Kitchener, Ontario).
The Friars will return to Franklin Park on Saturday, October 12 for the New England Championships, hosted by Boston College at noon.
