Team USA still advances to medal round on Saturday at 10 p.m. on ESPNU vs Argentina.
LIMA, Peru – Team USA was defeated by Puerto Rico, 87-84, in the final game of Pool play at the Pan American Games on Friday, August 2. Team USA completed Pool A competition with a 2-1 record and will play in the medal round on Saturday against the Argentina, the top seed in Pool B, at 10 p.m. ET on ESPNU.
Friar senior forward Alpha Diallo (New York, N.Y.) had 16 points and four rebounds for the USA squad. PC sophomore David Duke (Providence, R.I.) added eight points in nine minutes of action.
A win on Saturday over Argentina by Team USA would put the US into the Gold Medal Game against the winner of the Puerto Rico-Dominican Republic contest on Sunday. A loss would mean a battle for the bronze medal, also on Sunday.
"We didn't play with our usual composure and maturity down the stretch," Head Coach Ed Cooley said (Providence). "They (Puerto Rico) made some big shots and executed well and we did not. But I am pleased and proud of this team to be able to compete in the medal round. We can't wait for tomorrow's game."
Villanova's Jermaine Samuels led the Team USA with 17 points on 6-9 shooting.
