Boyce is one of four players from the BIG EAST to be selected in the 30-man candidate pool.

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – Tate Boyce (Matthews, N.C.) of the Providence College men's lacrosse team was selected as a candidate for the prestigious 2019 Senior CLASS Award in collegiate lacrosse, as announced Monday, March 4.

To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in the four domains of community, classroom, character and competition. An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School, the Senior CLASS award focuses on the total student-athlete.

Boyce, a senior goalkeeper for the Friars, has played in all 53 games since stepping on campus as a freshman. He holds a 9.42 goals against average, a .545 save percentage and has made 589 saves in his career. Boyce is a three-time All-BIG EAST First Team selection, one of just two players in program history to earn this distinction. Boyce was also named BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Year in 2017. In that same season, he picked up USILA/Nike Third-Team All-America honors and Inside Lacrosse Honorable Mention All-America accolades, as well. Recently, he was one of 50 players named to the Tewaarton Watch List. It is the second-consecutive season that Boyce has been named to the watch list.

Boyce's character is best exemplified by the fact that his a three-time captain for the Friars. He is an irreplaceable leader for the program and has demonstrated a high level of character since joining the Providence College family. In the words of Head Coach Chris Gabrielli, "Tate
is a true game and program changer."

The senior goalkeeper has demonstrated a commitment to the community, volunteering at Hasbro Children's Hospital every Wednesday during the offseason. Additionally, he helped the program raise money for "Kids Vs. Cancer," another initiative linked with Hasbro Children's Hospital. The Friar lacrosse program also hosts a free coaches' clinic for local, offering an opportunity for coaches to learn and also help grow the game. Boyce has been a part of those clinics over the past few seasons.

In the classroom, Boyce is pursuing a degree in marketing and holds over a 3.0 cumulative grade-point average. The senior is a two-time BIG EAST All-Academic Team selection, earning the distinction in both 2016-17 and 2017-18.

The pool of 30 men's lacrosse players will be narrowed down to 10 finalists midway through the regular season. Those 10 names will then be placed on the official ballot, which will be distributed through a nationwide voting system to media, coaches and fans. Eventually, one male candidate who best exemplifies excellence in the four Cs of community, classroom, character and competition will be selected. The winners will be announced during the NCAA Men's Lacrosse National Championship in May.
