No. 25 Field Hockey Claims 1-0 Win Over Rider On Senior Day

Senior Mary O'Reilly scored the game winner just 2:51 into the match.

PROVIDENCE, R.I.– The No. 25 Providence College field hockey team defeated Rider, 1-0, on Oct. 27 in its final regular-season home game at Lennon Family Field in Providence, R.I. The Friars improved to 12-5 overall, while Rider dropped to 11-5 overall.
 
MATCH HIGHLIGHTS:
• Senior midfielder Mary O'Reilly (Longmeadow, Mass.) batted in her fifth goal of the season as she redirected an initial shot by Kara Sanford (Hazleton, Pa.) into the cage just 2:51 into the game to give the Friars a 1-0 lead. Sanford was credited with the assist.
 
• After only one shot in the first quarter, Rider put up four shots in the second. Lydia Rice (Carle Place, N.Y.) made a pair of saves to maintain the 1-0 lead for Providence. In the first half, the Friars put all five of their shots on target.
 
• It was a tightly contested third quarter, with neither team scoring a goal. The Friars had one shot thanks to Izzy Mendez (Cedar Grove, N.J.), but her attempts was saved by Rider's Lena Vandam.  
 
• Rider outshot Providence 3-0 in the fourth quarter, putting just one attempt on target. Rice turned the effort away and secured three total saves on the afternoon for her sixth shutout of the season and 11thclean sheet of her career.
 
• The Friars' defense held Rider scoreless for just the third time this season, halting a streak of 11-straight games with at least one goal. The squad also kept leading scorers Julia Divorra (34 points) and Carly Brosious (33 points) in check, as the duo entered the game ranked in the top-10 among NCAA Division I players in points per game.
 
• Prior to the match, Providence honored its seven seniors and two graduate students who played their final game at Lennon Family Field. The seniors include Allyson Parker (Orange, Mass.), Izzy Mendez (Cedar Grove, N.J.), Kara Sanford (Hazleton, Pa.), Mikayla Michals (Needham, Mass.), Madison Deeds (Topton, Pa.), Madison Skeie (West Creek, N.J.) and O'Reilly. The graduate students include Corinne Kenney (Warrington, Pa.) and Rice.
