PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College men's basketball team returned home after a two-game road trip and defeated the DePaul Blue Demons, 70-67, at the Dunkin' Donuts Center on Sunday afternoon in a BIG EAST Conference battle. Drew Edwards (Perry Hall, Md.) and Alpha Diallo (New York, N.Y.) sealed the win shooting 4-4 from the free throw line with under 10 seconds remaining. After trading wins in opposing arenas last season, this was the first meeting between the two teams this season.
Diallo's team-high 20 points led Providence in the victory, but his free throw shooting is what made the difference. He converted on a career-high 14 free throws, without missing one. The team combined to shoot 22-26 in the game (84.6 percent).
The starting lineup included Isaiah Jackson (Gainesville, Fla.), who started for the first time since Nov. 13, when the Friars defeated Holy Cross. Jackson provided strong defense all game, finishing with four steals.
After missing the last nine games due to injury, Head Coach Ed Cooley brought A.J. Reeves (Roxbury, Mass.) off the bench at the 14:53 mark for limited minutes throughout the game. Reeves wasted no time after being named the BIG EAST freshman of the week three times in the beginning of the season. Just 11 seconds after entering the game, he knocked down a wing three for the Friars' first trey of the afternoon and gave Providence a 9-4 lead in the early going.
Reeves scored nine points in the first half, shooting 3-6 from behind the arc and converting on 2 of 3 free throw attempts.
Providence held strong on the defensive end in the first ten minutes, limiting DePaul to just 3-13 shooting from the field and 0-3 from three-point territory. Diallo contributed six points to the team's 13-8 lead (11:36), shooting 4-4 from the free-throw line.
The Friars extended their lead to 22-15 with 7:25 left in the half. Jackson led the defensive push, tallying three of the team's six steals in the first 13 minutes of play.
Drew Edwards (Perry Hall, Md.) scored back-to-back baskets to cap off their 6-0 run with five minutes left in the half. Makai Ashton-Langford (Worcester, Mass.) found Edwards on a backdoor cut for a layup, the next possession Diallo found him at the high post for an easy floater in the paint. Providence led 30-19 with 4:29 on the clock.
After the first 20 minutes of play the Friars led 33-27, Diallo and Reeves led the team combining for 21 of their 33 points. Reeves converted the teams three treys in the half while Diallo shot 6-6 from the free throw line. Providence's bench outscored the Blue Demons bench, 13-4 in the half and 26-6 in the game.
Eli Cain closed the six-point gap to two, 37-35, just two minutes into the half. Nate Watson started to find his groove at that point, backing down Femi Olujobi in the paint on back-to-back possessions for a layup and a right hook. Watson finished with 12 points in the second half after just tallying two in the first half, he added five rebounds in the game.
The six-point Providence lead stayed fairly consistent for the following eight minutes, with Edwards knocking down two free throws at the 10:29 mark to give the Friars a 47-41 lead.
The Friars came down with 15 offensive rebounds compared to DePaul's 11. Providence scored 16 second chance points over DePaul's four.
Both sides traded baskets for the next five minutes, with Edwards knocking down one of the biggest shots of the game. The Friars led 59-57 before Edwards found himself wide open for a wing three, the following possession they fed the post to Watson for a layup. The five-point run gave Providence a 64-57 lead with 2:59 remaining.
Max Strus knocked down three free throws for DePaul to cut the lead to 66-63, followed by a missed jumper by Diallo minutes later to give the Blue Demons the ball with 18 seconds remaining. Diallo and Edwards shot 4-4 in the final 10 seconds to seal the team's 70-67 victory.
