Men’s Basketball Drops Thriller At Seton Hall, 65-63

Alpha Diallo finished as Providence’s lone player in double figures with 21 points and three assists.

NEWARK, N.J. – The Providence College men's basketball team fell to Seton Hall University on Wednesday, Jan. 30 by a score of 65-63. The game was played at the Prudential Center in Newark, N.J. In the first meeting between these teams this season, the Friars picked up a 72-63 win at the Dunkin' Donuts Center on Jan. 15.
 
Alpha Diallo (New York, N.Y.) finished as Providence's lone player in double figures with 21 points and three assists. Makai Ashton-Langford (Worcester, Mass.) finished with five points, five rebounds and four assists.
 
Kalif Young (Vaughan, Ontario) came out with the hot hand in the early going, connecting on a baseline jumper off a feed from Alpha Diallo (New York, N.Y.), followed by an offensive board for an easy layup to knot the game at 6-6. Providence faced an 8-6 deficit at the first media timeout (15:40).
 
The Providence defense, leading the BIG EAST in steals per game (8.3), was active in the first half. The team combined for six steals, while forcing 12 turnovers. The Friars finished with seven steals and forced 19 turnovers in the game. At the Dunkin' Donuts Center in the last meeting between these two teams on Jan. 15, Providence forced the Pirates into 22 turnovers in the Friars' nine-point win.
 
Seton Hall outscored Providence, 18-7, up until the 5:17 mark left in the first half. The run forced Head Coach Ed Cooley to take a timeout with a nine-point disadvantage. Diallo halted the run with an and-one layup in the paint, converting the free throw.
 
Myles Powell answered with a deep trey before Diallo matched his three with a corner trey of his own, Diallo's three cut the Seton Hall lead to, 27-23, with 3:24 left to play in the half. He finished with a team-high 12 points on 5-9 shooting in the first half. Providence held Seton Hall to just 1-7 shooting from three-point territory in the half.
 
After Seton Hall scored the first basket of the second half, Providence used a 13-0 run over 2:13 to grab their first lead since the 11:56 mark (11-10) in the first half. David Duke (Providence, R.I.) and Diallo both finished tough layups in the paint while being fouled. Both players converted the free throws to hand the Friars a 40-36 advantage.
 
Providence maintained their four-point cushion late into the second half. With 11:43 left in the game, Nate Watson (Arlington, Va.) knocked down one of two free throws to push the Friar lead to 48-43.
 
Seton Hall closed the gap amid Drew Edwards (Perry Hall, Md.) knocking down two big threes for Providence. He knocked down his first trey from the left wing before converting on a wide open three from the right corner. The Pirates cut the Providence lead down to one, 54-53, with 8:01 left in the game.
 
In a back and forth second half, the game was tied at 56-56 (4:22) before Diallo knocked down a three to give Providence a three-point lead. Diallo grabbed the offensive rebound earlier in the possession to extend the play. Providence brought down six offensive rebounds in the game.
 
Seton Hall took a four-point advantage, 65-61, with 1:46 left in the game after shooting 4-5 from the field amidst a 7-0 run.
 
Myles Cale missed the front end of a one-and-one with 18 seconds remaining to give Providence one last possession, trailing 65-63. Jackson was stood up at the rim to wrap up Seton Hall's 65-63 win.
 
Myles Powell paced the Pirates with 31 points and four rebounds.
 
Up next, Providence will travel to Chicago, Ill. to matchup with the DePaul Blue Demons on Saturday, Feb. 2 at 2:30 p.m. The game will be broadcasted on FS1.
