The Friars will close the weekend with a non-conference match against LIU Brooklyn on Alumni Day.
SCOUTING PROVIDENCE COLLEGE (3-4): The Providence College field hockey team will open BIG EAST Conference action on Friday, Sept. 14 against 15th-ranked Old Dominion. The match, originally scheduled to be played in Norfolk, Va., has been moved to Easton, Pa. on the campus of Lafayette College and will begin at Noon. The Friars will return home to Lennon Family Field to host non-conference foe LIU Brooklyn on Sunday, Sept 16 at 1:00 p.m. The match against LIU Brooklyn will serve as the program's annual Alumni Day.
The Friars enter the weekend with a 3-4 overall record. Providence had a three-game win streak going with victories over Brown (1-0), Bryant (4-1) and New Hampshire (2-1), but fell in its most recent game against 14th-ranked Iowa (1-0) on Sept. 8.
Five players have scored two-or-more goals this season, and eight players overall have cracked the points column. Junior Allyson Parker (Orange, Mass.) leads the team in scoring with seven points on three goals and one assist. Fellow junior Izzy Mendez (Cedar Grove, N.J.) is second on the team in scoring with six points, joining Parker with a team-best three goals. Sophomore Maddie Babineau (Milton, Ontario) has recorded five points on one goal and a team-high three assists. Freshman Amanda Collins (San Diego, Calif.) also has recorded three assists for Providence, in addition to leading the team with two defensive saves.
Senior Lydia Rice (Carle Place, N.Y.), who recently earned BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll recognition on Sept. 10, has played 420 minutes in the cage for Providence and owns a 1.67 goals against average and a 0.697 save percentage. Rice has posted a 3-3 overall record and earned her first career shut-out victory against Brown (1-0) on Sept. 1.
As a team, Providence has out-shot its opponents, 81-70, and has held a 50-32 advantage in penalty corners.
Old Dominion leads the all-time series against Providence, 5-1. The Friars' lone victory in the series came during the 2016 campaign (1-0, OT). Providence and LIU Brooklyn will meet for the first time in the history of the two programs on Sunday.
SCOUTING #15 OLD DOMINION (6-0): Old Dominion enters the weekend with a 6-0 record and is one of just seven teams remaining in NCAA Division I with an unbeaten record. The Monarchs are ranked 15th in the latest NFHCA Division I National Coaches' Poll, released on Sept. 11. The squad is 3-0 vs. nationally-ranked opponents, having defeated No. 22 William & Mary (4-3, OT), No. 17 James Madison (3-0) and No. 8 Virginia (2-1, OT).
Eight players have scored at least one goal for ODU this season, led by Erin Huffman (3g/1a) and Ilse Westera (3g/1a), who have tallied three goals apiece and also lead the team in points, with seven each. Merle Knobloch also checks in with seven points for the Monarchs, having tallied two goals and a team-best three assists. All three of Huffman's goals have been game winners.
Old Dominion has scored 10 of its 14 goals this season during the second half, and have added two goals in overtime. The Monarchs have led their opponents in shots (94-43), shots on goal (60-25) and penalty corners (43-22).
In cage, Old Dominion has platooned three goalkeepers, each appearing in two games and all three entering the weekend with a 2-0 record. Additionally, all three goalkeepers have earned a victory against a nationally-ranked opponent. Cam MacGillivray leads ODU with a 0.48 goals against average and a 0.889 save percentage, and was the goalkeeper of record in the Monarch's most recent victory over No. 8 Virgina. Lacey Frazier checks in with a 0.50 goals against average and a 0.750 save percentage, followed by Kealsie Robles, who owns a 1.43 goals against average and a 0.727 save percentage.
SCOUTING LIU BROOKLYN (0-6): LIU Brooklyn is in the midst of its third season competing as an NCAA Division I field hockey program. The Blackbirds enter the weekend with an 0-6 overall record and will face Holy Cross on Sept. 14 in Worcester, Mass. before making their way to Friartown.
Eva van Wakeren leads LIU Brooklyn with seven points on three goals and one assist. She has attempted 19 of the Blackbirds' 46 shots and has put 13 of them on target. Madi Cook is second on the team in scoring with two goals for four points. Jenna Chrabolowski and Lauren Alburg each have tallied one goal this season.
Molly Jannell has played 416 minutes in the cage for LIU Brooklyn and owns a 4.38 goals against average and a 0.671 save percentage. She has recorded 53 saves through six games.
