Friars will face Boston College and Hartford on the final day of the Boston College Invitational.
CHESTNUT HILL, MASS. - The Providence College volleyball team opened the 2018 campaign with a 3-0 loss to Sacred Heart on Friday, Aug. 24 at the Boston College Invitational in Chestnut Hill, Mass.
FIRST SET HIGHLIGHTS:
-Providence trailed 18-17 in the first set, but Sacred Heart out-scored the Friars 7-2 down the stretch to take the victory (25-19).
- Lindsey Schaible (Tampa, Fla.) and Allison Impellizeri (Seaford, N.Y.) combined for six of the Friars' nine kills in the set.
- Mackenzie Taylor (Holbrook, N.Y.) paced Providence with four digs in the opening set as she made her collegiate debut.
SECOND SET HIGHLIGHTS:
- The second set was tied 4-4 in the early going. However, the Pioneers put together a 13-2 scoring run, including a stretch of six-straight points to take a 17-6 lead. Sacred Heart held firm to earn a 25-14 victory.
- Jenae Alderson (Brooklyn Park, Minn.) led the Friars with three kills and she added two digs.
- Taylor collected four digs to lead the Friars for the second-straight set in that category.
- Attacking errors plagued the Friars, as the team recorded five kills and 10 erros on 32 total attacks (-.156).
THIRD SET HIGHLIGHTS:
- Sacred Heart took the third set, 25-14, clinching the match in straight sets (3-0).
- Preseason All-BIG EAST selection Addison Root (Wichita, Kan.) and Megan Onyundo (Woodbridge, Va.) combined for six of the Friars' nine kills in the set, with three each.
- Taylor and Root each recorded two digs.
MATCH NOTES:
- For the match, Providence hits -.023, featuring 23 kills and 25 errors on 88 total attacks.
- Setter Allison Barber (Woodbury, Minn.) led Providence with 17 assists.
- Taylor finished the match with a team-high 10 digs and added three assists.
- Root finished the day with a team-high five kills. Onyundo and Impellizeri added four kills each.
WHAT'S NEXT:
Providence will return to action for the final day of the Boston College Invitational on Saturday, Aug. 25. The Friars will face host Boston College at 11:00 a.m., followed by a match-up against Hartford at 4:30 p.m.
