Volleyball Opens 2018 Season At Boston College Invitational

The Friars will take on Sacred Heart in their first match of the year on Aug. 24 at 4:30 p.m.

PROVIDENCE, R.I.– The Providence College volleyball team is set to begin the 2018 season at the Boston College Invitational on Aug. 24-25 in Chestnut Hill, Mass. Providence will play its first match of the season against the Sacred Heart University Pioneers on Friday, Aug. 24 at 4:30 p.m. The Friars return for two matches on the second day of the tournament (Saturday, Aug. 25), facing the Boston College Eagles at 11:00 a.m. before finishing the tournament against the Hartford University Hawks at 4:30 p.m.
 
SCOUTING THE FRIARS:The Friars finished the 2017 season with a 17-16 overall record and a 6-12 record in the BIG EAST Conference. Providence's 17 victories during the 2017 season marked the most wins in a single season since 2007, when the team finished with a 19-12 record. Providence finished the season above .500 in win percentage for the first time since 2007. The Friars also opened the season with an 11-match winning streak, which is their best start to a season since 1989. Providence's six conference wins are the most since rejoining the BIG EAST in 2014. 
 
Junior Addison Root (Wichita, Kan.), Jenae Alderson (Brooklyn Park, Minn.), and sophomore Allison Barber (Woodbury, Minn.) look to continue their success from last season for the Friars in the upcoming season. In 2017, Root was named to the All-BIG EAST Second Team in her first season with the Friars.She became the first Friar since 2001 to earn a BIG EAST postseason honor.Root led the team in kills (416), kills per set (3.59), service aces (36) and was third on the team in digs (258). In the BIG EAST, the outside hitter ranked third in service aces per set (.31), fifth in kills per set (3.59) and fifth in points per set (4.01). For her efforts in the 2017 season, Root was named to the 2018 Preseason All-BIG EAST team, as announced by the conference office on Aug. 6. At the 2017 Boston College Invitational, Root was named to the All-Tournament Team. Alderson had a successful sophomore year tallying the second most kills for the Friars (269) and kills per set (2.32). Barber also had a strong freshman campaign, leading the Friars in assists (116) and assists per set (10.1). Barber recorded the second most service aces (30) and digs (327) for the Friars. She was also named BIG EAST Freshman of the Week on Sep. 26, 2017. 
 
SCOUTING THE PIONEERS:The Sacred Heart University Pioneers finished their 2017 season with a record of 12-15.
 
The Pioneers return both of their top attackers from the 2017 season. Makayla Dole was named as an All-NEC Second-Team. Dole led the Pioneers in kills (404) and kills per set (3.61), while earning 457.5 points (4.1 p/s). Red-shirt junior Liisel Nelis played in all 112 sets across all 27 matches and ranked second on the team with 388 kills and 3.46 kills per set. 
 
SCOUTING THE EAGLES: The Boston College Eagles finished last season with a record of 7-23.
 
The Eagles will look to Cat Balido offensively this year after having the second most kills 286 (2.7 k/s) in the 2017 season. The Eagles top defensive player, Jill Strockis, returns after leading the team in digs (404) and digs per set (3.78).
 
SCOUTING THE HAWKS: The Hartford University Hawks concluded their 2017 season with a 6-20 record. 
 
The Hawks return their top player both offensively and defensively, sophomore Abby Nash. Nash lead the Hawks in kills (191) and digs (171). 
 
WHAT'S NEXT:The Providence College volleyball team will return home to host the 14thAnnual Friar Volleyball Classic on Aug. 31 – Sept. 1 at Alumni Hall in Providence, R.I. The Friars will host a total of six games and will welcome UMass Lowell, Brown, and Fairleigh Dickinson as this year's participants.
