Women's Basketball Game Notes

PROVIDENCE SET TO HOST FRIAR HOLIDAY CLASSIC.. The Providence College women's basketball team will host the Friar Holiday Classic on Dec. 19-21 at Alumni Hall/Mullaney Gymnasium in Providence, R.I. The three-day event will feature four teams and a total of six games. Pepperdine, Northern Kentucky and La Salle will join the Friars in the tournament. The opening game is set for 4:30 p.m. on Dec. 19 between Providence and Pepperdine.

LIVE BROADCAST... Each game of the Friar Holiday Classic will be broadcast live on Friars All-Access, which is part of a subscription service on www.Friars.com. Mike Mancuso will provide the play-by-play.

FRIARS ALL-TIME VS. PEPPERDINE... The Friars and Waves have met just once during the history of the two women's basketball programs. Pepperdine defeated Providence, 64-51, on Nov. 27, 2009 as part of the Warner Center Marriott Classic in Northridge, Calif.

PROVIDENCE AND NORTHERN KENTUCKY WILL MEET FOR THE FIRST TIME... Providence and Northern Kentucky will meet for the first time in program history on day two of the Friar Holiday Classic. The match-up is set for 4:30 p.m. on Dec. 19.

FRIARS ALL-TIME VS. LA SALLE... La Salle leads the all-time series against Providence College, 2-0, and Friday's game will be the first since the 2004-05 season. The game also will be the first between the two teams at Alumni Hall in Providence, R.I. The previous two games took place in Philadelphia, Pa. The first meeting occurred on Dec. 29, 1980, with La Salle earning a 71-66 victory as part of the La Salle Christmas Tournament. The Explorers improved to 2-0 against the Friars with a 68-32 win on Dec. 22, 2004.

FRIARS WIN FIVE OF LAST SEVEN GAMES... Providence College started the season with an 0-2 record, losing to Penn State (74-72) and Quinnipiac (48-44) by a combined total of six points. Since then, the Friars have reeled off wins in five of their last seven games. Their only losses in the span came to in-state rival Rhode Island, 72-65, in the opening game of the 3rd Annual Ocean State Tip-Off Tournament on Dec. 1. Providence dropped its most recent game to unbeaten Northeastern, 65-59, on Dec. 15 in Providence, R.I.

FRIARS RALLY IN THE FOURTH, BUT FALL SHORT AGAINST UNBEATEN NORTHEASTERN... Providence College fell to Northeastern, 65-59, on Dec. 15 in Providence, R.I. The Friars dropped to 5-4 with the loss, while the Huskies remained unbeaten at 9-0 on the season. Northeastern led by as many as 15 points in the fourth quarter (57-42) with 7:28 remaining on the clock. The Friars went on a 17-4 run to get within two (61-59) with 1:19 left in the game, but the Huskies held on down the stretch with a 4-4 performance at the free-throw line. Providence's Chanell Williams scored 10 of her team-high 20 points during the fourth-quarter run. She finished the day 9-15 from the field and added two rebounds, one assist and a career-high five steals. Friars' leading scorer Jovana Nogic was held to nine points on the day and contributed four steals, two rebounds, one assist and one blocked shot. The Friars forced 25 turnovers on the afternoon, highlighted by a season-best 14 steals, which provided a 21-3 scoring advantage in points off of turnovers. However, the Huskies were able to erase that with some hot shooting from three-point territory, hitting 12-24 attempts from beyond the arc (.500). Northeastern's Jess Jenco led all scorers with 31 points and added seven rebounds and three assists. She hit 11-16 field goals, including 9-12 from three-point land. Shannon Todd contributed 14 points, while Gabby Giacone registered a double-double on 11 points and 11 boards. Northeastern held a 33-30 lead at halftime and positioned itself well in the third quarter with a 17-9 scoring advantage. The Huskies took a 50-39 edge into the final 10 minutes.

10-POINTS OR LESS... Seven of the Friars' nine games have been decided by 10-points or less. Providence has posted a 3-4 record in those games, including a 1-2 mark in games decided by five-points or less.

FRIARS ARE 5-0 WHEN THEY OUT-REBOUND OR RECORD THE SAME NUMBER OF BOARDS AS THEIR OPPONENT... Providence owns a 5-0 record this season when they out-rebound or post the same number of rebounds as their opponents. On Nov. 21, the Friars recorded a season-best 47 boards in a win over Sacred Heart, while limiting the Pioneers to 28 rebounds. On Nov. 27, Providence held a 46-38 edge on the glass in a 61-57 win over Boston College. In their most recent victory, the Friars out-rebounded UMass Lowell, 35-27. Providence recorded the same number of rebounds as its opponents in wins over Yale (40-40) and Bryant (32-32).

CHANELL WILLIAMS NAMED TO BIG EAST WEEKLY HONOR ROLL FOR SECOND TIME THIS SEASON... Providence College sophomore guard Chanell Williams was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll on Dec. 17. It marked the second time this season that Williams has been named to the Weekly Honor Roll, having previously earned those accolades on Nov. 26. Last week, Williams scored a team-high 20 points in the Friars' only game of the week against unbeaten Northeastern. It marked the second time this season that Williams reached the 20-point plateau – and second time in her career. She hit 9-15 attempts from the field (.600) and added two rebounds, one assist and a career-high five steals. Additionally, she scored 10 of her 20 points during the fourth quarter, bringing the Friars to within two points of the Huskies with just over a minute to play in the game. Leading into the Friar Holiday Classic, Williams ranks second on the team in scoring (10.7 ppg) and assists (2.3 apg) and averages 2.2 rebounds and 1.1 steals per game. She leads the Friars and ranks fifth among BIG EAST Conference players in field-goal percentage (.554, 41-74).

NOGIC SET TO CRACK TOP-10 ALL-TIME IN SCORING AT PROVIDENCE... Jovana Nogic owns 1,371 career points (13.8 ppg) as a Friar and needs just two points to crack the top-10 on the Friars' all-time scoring list. Since the start of the season, she has jumped seven spots on the career scoring list and currently ranks 11th. Nogic trails Providence College Hall of Famer and Friar legend, Doris (Sable) Burke '87, who sits in 10th place with 1,372 points.

THREE-STRAIGHT GAMES WITH 40+ REBOUNDS... The Friars recorded 40-or-more rebounds in three-consecutive games for the first time since the 2014-15 season. That year, Providence hauled in 40+ rebounds in three-straight games against DePaul (47), Villanova (41) and Georgetown (43). This season, Providence secured 47 boards against Sacred Heart, 46 vs. Boston College and 40 against Yale.

FRIARS POST +19 ADVANTAGE ON THE BOARDS... The Friars' 47 boards vs. Sacred Heart on Nov. 21 are the most in a single game since Dec. 21, 2016, when the squad also hauled in 47 points vs. Monmouth. Additionally, Providence's +19 rebounding margin marked the largest rebounding margin for the Friars since out-rebounding UMass Lowell, 65-39 (+26), on Nov. 9, 2013.

DEFENSE... The Friars have held four of their eight opponents to 30-percent shooting from the field or lower this season. Providence has posted a 3-1 record in those games, with its only defeat coming against Quinnipiac. Providence held the Bobcats to 27.9-percent from the field in a four-point loss (48-44). On Nov. 29 against Yale, the Friars held the Bulldogs to just 23.5-percent from the field (12-51), marking their best field-goal percentage defense of the season. Rhode Island is the only opponent to shoot better than 45-percent from the field against Providence (.455, 25-55). Additionally, the Friars are 4-1 when they hold their opponent below 40-percent from the field.

JOVANA NOGIC SETS ALL-TIME THREE-POINT RECORD AT PROVIDENCE COLLEGE... Jovana Nogic set the program's all-time three-point field goal record on Dec. 8 at UMass Lowell. The previous mark was held by Julie Wheeler '98, with 252, in 101 games (1994-98). Nogic cleared that record with her second three-point bucket of the day against the River Hawks, with 7:51 remaining in the third quarter. Entering the Friar Holiday Classic, Nogic owns 258 three-pointers in 99 career games.

NOGIC HOLDS SINGLE-SEASON RECORD FOR THREE-POINTERS... Jovana Nogic set the Providence College single-season record for three-pointers, with 91, during the 2016-17 season. The previous record was held by Julie Wheeler '98, which she set during the 1994-95 season, with 82.

BASKERVILLE POSTS THREE-STRAIGHT DOUBLE-DIGIT GAMES... Freshman forward Mary Baskerville recorded double-digits in the scoring column in three-consecutive games for the first time in her rookie career. She scored a career-best 11 points against URI on Dec. 1 and followed with 10 points against Bryant (Dec. 2) and 10 points against UMass Lowell (Dec. 8). For the season, Baskerville is averaging 6.7 points, 6.0 rebounds, 1.4 blocked shots and 1.2 steals per game.

1,000-POINT MILESTONE WITHIN REACH FOR MADDIE JOLIN... Maddie Jolin has recorded 827 career points during her career. She posted her best offensive season a year ago, totaling 330 points for an average of 10.6 points per game. Through nine games, Jolin is averaging 8.6 points per game and is on pace to become the 35th player in program history to score 1,000 points.

20-POINT PLATEAU... Two Friars have scored 20+ points in a game this season, through nine games. Jovana Nogic has hit the mark twice, with 20 points against Rhode Island and a season-high 22 points against Bryant. Nogic has scored 20+ points in 20 games during her career, including a career-best 31 points against Northeastern last season (Nov. 14, 2017). Williams posted a career-high 25 points against Sacred Heart, marking the first 20+ point game of her career and the top-scoring game of any Friar this season. She also hit for 20 points against Northeastern in the Friars' most recent game on Dec. 15.

OLIVIA ORLANDO AND MARY BASKERVILLE LEAD THE FRIARS ON THE GLASS... Olivia Orlando (6.6 rpg) and Mary Baskerville (6.0 rpg) lead the Friars on the boards this season through nine games. Orlando grabbed a career-high 12 rebounds against Sacred Heart on Nov. 21 and has led the team in rebounding five times. Baskerville hauled in the Friars' highest rebounding total of the season with a career-best 13 boards against Yale (Nov. 29) and has led the team twice. Senior Maddie Jolin is the only other Friar to lead Providence on the boards this season (vs. Boston College and UMass Lowell).

JOVANA NOGIC NAMED TO ANN MEYERS DRYSDALE AWARD WATCH LIST... On Oct. 23, it was announced that Jovana Nogic was named to the 20-player watch list for the Ann Meyers Drysdale Award, which is presented annually to the top shooting guard in NCAA Division I. It marks the second-straight season that Nogic has been featured on the watch list.

JOVANA NOGIC FEATURED ON 11-PLAYER PRESEASON ALL-BIG EAST TEAM... Jovana Nogic was named to the 2018-19 Preseason All-BIG EAST Team on Oct. 25 at the league's annual media day at Madison Square Garden in New York City. Nogic is one of 11 players to earn preseason recognition. It marks the second-straight year that she has earned Preseason All-BIG EAST honors. Nogic was named an All-BIG EAST Honorable Mention honoree at the conclusion of the 2016-17 season.

JOVANA NOGIC NAMED TO BIG EAST WEEKLY HONOR ROLL... Jovana Nogic earned BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll recognition for the first time during the 2017-18 season on Monday, Dec. 3. Nogic averaged 17.5 points, 3.5 rebounds and 2.0 assists in a 3-1 week for the Friars. She closed the week with back-to-back 20-point games against Rhode Island (20) and Bryant (22) during the Third Annual Ocean State Tip-Off Tournament, and was named to the All-Tournament Team. In Providence's 72-64 victory over Bryant, she scored the Friars' final nine points in the last 1:14 of the game on a three-point bucket and a 6-6 performance at the foul line. In Providence's 59-42 win over Yale (Nov. 29), as she scored 10 of her 16 points in the fourth quarter. The Friars held a slim, 41-39, leading heading into the final 10 minutes against the Bulldogs, and she accounted for 10 of the Friars' 18 points, overall, in the fourth quarter. For the week, she shot .407 from the field (22-54), including 15-37 from three-point range (.405). She also was 11-11 from the free-throw line.

FRIARS HAND BOSTON COLLEGE FIRST LOSS OF THE SEASON... Providence College defeated Boston College, 61-57, on Nov. 27 at Conte Forum in Chestnut Hill, Mass. It marked Boston College's first loss of the season (6-1). The victory was the first for Providence at Conte Forum since Feb. 17, 1996. It's also the first back-to-back victories over the Eagles since 1993-1994. Boston College is 8-2 this season and the Friars are the only team to hold the Eagles below 60 points.

JOVANA NOGIC AND MADDIE JOLIN COMBINE FOR 31 POINTS TO FUEL OFFENSE AGAINST YALE... Jovana Nogic (16 points) and Maddie Jolin (15 points) combined for 31 of the Friars' 59 points in a victory against Yale on Nov. 29. The duo fueled a decisive fourth quarter run, scoring 15 of the team's 18 points to lift the Friars to victory. Nogic tallied 10 of her game-high 16 points in the final quarter.

ALYSSA GEARY PROVIDES SPARK IN WIN OVER BOSTON COLLEGE... Freshman forward Alyssa Geary scored a career-high 13 points in the Friars' victory over Boston College on Nov. 27. She shot 4-7 from the field, including a 4-5 performance from behind the three-point arc. Geary also added six rebounds, one blocked shot and one steal in a career-high 27 minutes of action.

STRONG FOURTH QUARTER FUELS FRIARS TO VICTORY OVER SACRED HEART... The Providence College women's basketball team defeated Sacred Heart, 62-52, on Nov. 21 for the Friars' first victory of the season. The Pioneers out-scored Providence, 20-9, in the third quarter to take a three-point lead heading into the final frame. The Friars dominated the fourth quarter with a 19-6 scoring advantage and a solid performance on the defensive end.

FOURTH QUARTER COMEBACK FALLS SHORT AGAINST QUINNIPIAC... The Providence College women's basketball team staged a fourth-quarter comeback, but fell short in a 48-44 loss to Quinnipiac on Nov. 15 in Providence, R.I. The Friars trailed by 13 (41-28) with 9:25 remaining in the game, but went on a 12-0 run to get within one (41-40) with 2:57 left on the clock. Jen Fay halted the run for the Bobcats with a pair of free throws, but Olivia Orlando answered with two made free throws on the other end to get back within one (43-42). Providence got a stop on the defensive end of the floor and looked to take its first lead since the 6:41 mark of the first quarter, but turned the ball over. Fay went to the line for Quinnipiac and missed both attempts, but the Bobcats kept control of the ball with an offensive board. After a timeout by Quinnipiac, Fay gave her team a 45-42 advantage with 1:22 to play. Senior Maddie Jolin hit two free throws for Providence with 50-seconds on the game clock to make the score 45-44. The Bobcats called timeout to advance the ball to mid-court and drew up another play for Fay, who hit a fall-away jumper as the shot clock was winding down. Providence brought the ball down the floor to the offensive end and called a timeout with 10.2-seconds left. The Friars turned the ball over on the inbounds play, and Fay sealed the win for Quinnipiac with a free throw. Jolin finished the night with nine points for the Friars. Orlando notched six points and a career-high nine rebounds.

FRIARS FALL TO PENN STATE IN SEASON OPENER... The Friars led by as many as 15 points with 3:48 remaining in the third quarter, but fell to Penn State, 74-72 in their season opener on Nov. 8 in University Park, Pa. Providence held the lead for just over 36 minutes of action, but Penn State used a 23-9 scoring advantage in the fourth quarter to gain a tie the game, 72-72, with 36-seconds left on the clock. Providence committed a turnover on its next possession and Penn State's Sam Breen was fouled on the other end with 0.4 seconds left. Breen sank a pair of free throws to give the Nittany Lions their first lead since 4:13 of the first quarter (16-15). Providence called a timeout to advance the ball to mid-court and draw up a final play. Freshman Alyssa Geary converted a bucket off of a lob pass into the post, but the officials waved off the basket after a video review showing the ball was still in her hand as the clock expired.

KAELA WEBB NETS MOST POINTS IN COLLEGIATE DEBUT AT PROVIDENCE SINCE 2013... Freshman guard Kaela Webb came off the bench to score 15 points in her collegiate debut with the Friars against Penn State (Nov. 8). Her 15 points are the most by a freshman at Providence in their collegiate debut since Sarah Beal '17 posted 20 points vs. UMass Lowell on Nov. 9, 2013. She was 6-11 from the field (.545), including 2-4 shooting from three-point territory. She also recorded one rebound, two assists and two steals in 23 minutes of action.

LOOKING BACK AT 2017-18 SEASON... The Friars finished the 2017-18 campaign with a 10-21 overall record and a 3-15 mark in the BIG EAST Conference. Providence fell to Butler in overtime, 73-67, in the BIG EAST Tournament First Round, held at Wintrust Arena in Chicago, Ill.

FRIARS PICKED TO FINISH NINTH IN BIG EAST PRESEASON COACHES' POLL... Providence College was picked to finish ninth in the BIG EAST Preseason Coaches' Poll, released on Oct. 25 at Madison Square Garden during the league's annual media day. DePaul and Marquette are co-favorites to win the league title, with each securing five first-place votes and 77 points.

PROVIDENCE SET THREE-POINT PERCENTAGE RECORD IN BACK-TO-BACK SEASONS... The Friars have set a single-season record for three-point field goal percentage each of the last two seasons. In 2016-17, Providence shot a school-record 0.374 from beyond the arc (192-514). Last season, the Friars topped the single-season record book, once again, shooting 0.391 from three-point territory (192-491).

MORE FROM DEEP... In each of the last two seasons, the Friars have connected on 192 three-point field goals. Providence's 192 three-pointers during the 2017-18 and 2016-17 are tied for the third-most triples in program history for a single season.

MADDIE JOLIN LOOKING TO BUILD OFF OF IMPRESSIVE JUNIOR CAMPAIGN... Last season, Maddie Jolin put together a solid junior campaign. She finished second among her teammates in scoring (10.6 ppg) and led the Friars in rebounding (4.7 rpg). Jolin also added 1.8 assists and 1.0 steal per contest. She found her rhythm from three-point territory and led the team in field-goal percentage from beyond the arc (.439, 66-158).

JOLIN FINISHED SECOND AMONG BIG EAST PLAYERS IN 3PT FIELD-GOAL PERCENTAGE... Maddie Jolin finished second among BIG EAST players in three-point field-goal percentage last season (.439, 66-158). Her percentage also ranked 21st among NCAA Division I players.

JOVANA NOGIC NOTCHED THIRD-HIGHEST SCORING TOTAL BY A JUNIOR IN PROGRAM HISTORY... Jovana Nogic's 513 points in 2017-18 marked the third-highest single-season scoring total by a junior in program history. The top-two on the list include, Friars' all-time leading scorer Tracy Lis (759) and Nadine Malcolm (628). Additionally, Nogic was the first player to eclipse 500 points in a single season since Chelsea Marandola (613) during the 2009-10 campaign.

NOGIC RANKS AMONG NCAA ACTIVE CAREER LEADERS FROM BEYOND THE ARC... Jovana Nogic ranks 12th among active NCAA Division I players in career three-point percentage (through games played Dec. 3). Nogic has hit 40.6-percent of her attempts from beyond the arc (251-618). Additionally, she ranks 18th among active NCAA career leaders in three-pointers made per game (2.59) and 12th in three-point field goals made (251).

FRIARS IN OVERTIME GAMES UNDER JIM CROWLEY... Providence is 2-4 in overtime games under the direction of third-year Friars Head Coach Jim Crowley. In his first season with the program (2016-17), Providence posted a 1-2 mark in overtime games. In 2017-18, Providence compiled a 1-2 mark in overtime. The Friars are 2-0 in overtime games when they score 90+ points, and they are 0-3 in overtime vs. BIG EAST Conference opponents.

BIG EAST OPENING WEEKEND... Providence will open the 2018-19 BIG EAST Conference schedule on the road with a pair of games against Marquette (Dec. 29) and DePaul (Dec. 31). Both teams are currently ranked in the national polls. In October, as the league's annual media day, it was revealed that Marquette and DePaul were picked as co-favorites to win the conference, with each team earning five first-place votes and 77 points.
