Friars Defeat Pepperdine In Opening Game Of Friar Holiday Classic, 66-47

PROVIDENCE, R.I.– The Providence College women's basketball team defeated Pepperdine, 66-47, in the opening game of the 2018 Friar Holiday Classic on Dec. 19 at Alumni Hall in Providence, R.I.  The Friars improved to 6-4, while Pepperdine dropped to 5-3 on the season.
 
Both teams came out firing offensively in the first quarter as Providence built a 25-19 lead after 10 minutes of play.  The Friars shot 80-percent from the field (8-10), including a 3-4 showing from three-point territory.  The Waves were just as efficient, hitting 72.7-percent from the floor (8-11).
 
The Friars and Waves cooled off in the second quarter, as Pepperdine held a 7-4 scoring advantage during the frame.  Providence hit just 2-16 attempts from the floor (.125), while Pepperdine checked in at 25-percent shooting (3-12).
 
Senior guard Maddie Jolin (Rehoboth, Mass.) led the Friars with six points in the first half and was one of nine players on the roster to crack the scoring column.
 
Providence earned its first double-digit lead of the contest in the third quarter (40-30) as the Friars went on an 11-4 scoring run through the first 4:20 of play.  Senior guard Jovana Nogic (Belgrade, Serbia) scored nine of the Friars' 11 points in the run as she went 3-3 from beyond the three-point arc.  Pepperdine managed to close within six points on two occasions, but the Friars ran out to an 11-point advantage to finish the quarter, punctuated by Nogic's fourth triple of the game with seven-seconds left on the clock.
 
The Friars out-scored the Waves, 15-3, in the opening 6:46 of the fourth quarter to take its largest lead of the game (66-45).
 
Nogic led all scorers with 22 points on 7-12 shooting from the field, including a 6-9 effort from beyond the arc.  Jolin, Chanell Williams (Bronx, N.Y) and Mary Baskerville (Enfield, Conn.) each tallied nine points on the day.  Williams matched her career high with five assists, while Baskerville hauled in a game-high nine rebounds, and narrowly missed a bid at her first career double-double.
 
The Friars return to action on Thursday, Dec. 20 for the second day of the Friar Holiday Classic against Northern Kentucky University.  Tip-off is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. at Alumni Hall in Providence, R.I. La Salle and Pepperdine will square off in the second game of the day, which is scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m.
