Men’s Soccer Concludes Non-Conference Play at Brown

The Friars are 3-3-1 in non-conference play this season.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College men's soccer team plays its final non-conference game of the season tomorrow, Oct. 16, at Brown University. Kick-off is set for 7:00 p.m. at Stevenson-Pincince Field.

Scouting the Bears
Brown enters the mid-week tilt with a 6-5-0 record and a 1-2-0 mark in Ivy League play. Brown has won its last two games, most recently besting Harvard in double overtime (1-0). Toby Howell scored the game-winner in the 103rd minute. As a team, Brown averages 1.09 goals per game and 11.6 shots per game.
 
Daniel Schiller leads the Bears with 10 points on three goals and four assists. Matthew Chow and Derek Waleffe each have six points. Chow has two goals and two assists, while Waleffe has three goals. Freshman James Swomley has started eight games in net, including the last three. He holds a 1.57 goals against average and a 0.625 save percentage. He's 4-4-0 and has one shutout.
 
Scouting the Friars
Providence is coming off a 1-0 double-overtime victory at Seton Hall (Oct. 12). The team is 7-4-1 overall and 4-1-0 in BIG EAST play. The Friars currently sit in second place in league standings behind nationally-ranked Creighton. Steven Kilday (Marshfield, Mass.) scored his first goal of the season in the win at SHU. He was named BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week for his efforts. Joao Serrano (Evora, Portugal) assisted on Kilday's goal, picking up his third assist and fifth point of the season. Colin Miller (Bel Air, Md.) did not have to make a save in his third-consecutive shutout of the season.
 
Tiago Mendonca (Faro, Portugal) leads the Friars in points (8) and goals (4). Santos is close behind with seven points on three goals and an assist. Fellow freshman Andualem Chisholm (Attleboro, Mass.) has two goals, an assist and five points. Serrano also has five points (one goal, three assists). In net, Miller holds a 1.12 goals against average and a .708 save percentage. He's started all 12 games and has five shutouts.
 
Shutout Streak
Providence has not allowed a goal since the 88th minute at Butler (Sept. 22). The Friars have held opponents scoreless for 284:11 consecutive minutes.
 
One-Goal Games
Through 12 games, eight of the Friars' contests have been decided by just one goal. Six of those eight have been wins, including the recent 1-0 victory at Seton Hall (Oct. 12).
 
Friars Versus Ranked Opponents
Providence has picked up victories over two top-25 opponents so far this season. The Friars defeated then-No. 8 SMU in double overtime, 2-1 (Aug. 24). More recently, Providence took down then-No. 22 Xavier by a score of 2-0 (Sept. 29).
 
Stacking Up Against the BIG EAST
Providence is currently tied for third in the BIG EAST in shutouts (five) and fourth in shots (166). The Friars are also tied for fourth in corner kicks, averaging 5.67 per game.
 
In terms of individuals, Mendonca ranks tied for eighth in the league in goals with four. Santos is tied for third in game-winning goals (two). In conference games only, Santos is second in points per game (1.75) and goals per game (0.75).
 
Freshmen Impact
The Friars' roster features ten newcomers for the 2018 season. Six of the ten have seen action for the Friars. Ramzi Qawasmy (Landsdale, Pa.) has started all twelve games at center back, totaling 1,129 minutes on the season. Chisholm has made five starts and nine total appearances. He was named BIG EAST Freshman of the Week after a three-point weekend (Sept. 10).
 
Santos has come alive in league play, making four of his five appearances on the season. He's scored three goals and added one assist in just five games. He is second in the BIG EAST in points during conference play (seven) and goals in conference (three).
 
Kevin Vang (Cranston, R.I.), Raimondo Partito (Philadelphia, Pa.) and Christopher Roman (Glastonbury, Conn.) are the other Friars who have seen time on the pitch. Vang has made five starts in eleven appearances, while Partito and Roman have each come off the bench.

The Friars remain on the road for a BIG EAST contest at first-place Creighton. The game is set for Saturday, Oct. 20 at 8:00 p.m. (ET).
