WASHINGTON, D.C. - Behind a near triple-double from junior point guard Kyron Cartwright, the Providence College men's basketball team (13-7, 3-4) surged to a 74-56 road victory at Georgetown Monday night inside the Verizon Center.
The Friars led 42-27 at halftime and Georgetown (10-9, 1-5) could not move any closer for the entirety of the second half.
Cartwright had 10 points, eight assists and seven rebounds at the half and finished with an impressive line of 16 points, 11 assists and nine rebounds. The 11 assists marked a new BIG EAST best for Cartwright, while his nine boards set a new career high for the Compton, Calif., product.
Junior forward Rodney Bullock (Hampton, Va.) poured in 22 points for the second straight game while connecting on 9-of-18 field goals. It marked his seventh 20+ point game of the season.
Junior guard Jalen Lindsey (Murfreesboro, Tenn.) chipped in 14 points, grabbed five rebounds and hit 4-of-7 3-pointers while junior forward Emmitt Holt (Webster, N.Y.) added 11 points (4-5 FG).
The Friars shot 47.3 percent (26-55) in the game and hit 42.9 percent (9-21) of their shots from beyond the arc. On the strength of Cartwright's effort, PC dished out 19 assists - the most by the Friars since Dec. 17.
The Providence defense proved effective all night long, limiting the Hoyas to 32.7 percent (18-55) from the floor and 21.7 percent (5-23) from 3-point range. PC also forced 15 Hoya miscues and turned them into a 17-6 advantage in points off turnovers for the game.
With the victory, Providence has now won the past six meetings with Georgetown.
The Friars hit four of their first five shots and jumped out to a 12-8 lead at the 16:33 mark of the first half. The Hoyas pulled within two at 14-12, but Providence rallied back with a 13-2 run - capped by a Bullock fast break lay-in - to pull ahead by 13 (27-14). The run included seven points from Bullock and a six minute minute stretch in which PC limited the Hoyas to just one field goal.
Georgetown utilized a 10-1 spurt to pull back within four (28-24) with 3:39 to play in the period. At that point, a Lindsey 3-pointer, followed by six points in a row from Cartwright moved PC back up 12 (36-24). The Friars pushed it to 16 (42-26) late in the half and took a 42-27 lead into the break. In all, Providence closed the half on a 14-3 run.
The Friars limited Georgetown to 1-of-5 shooting to start the second half and took advantage, extending the lead to 21 (51-30) on a Cartwright lay-in at the 15:49 mark. Lindsey hit his third 3-pointer to keep the Friars in front by 21 (58-37) with 8:46 remaining and his fourth triple pushed PC ahead by 23 (69-46) with 3:46 to go.
Georgetown could not move closer than 20 for the remainder of the contest.
The Friars will return to action on Saturday at No. 1 Villanova at noon on Fox.
