PROVIDENCE, R.I. -

The women's soccer team defeated the Central Connecticut Blue Devils on Thursday, Sept. 15, 3-1. The Friars move to 5-3-1 on the season. The Blue Devils move to 2-7.

The Friars took the lead in the 17th minute when graduate student Kathryn Hiller (Dartmouth, Mass.) notched her fourth goal on the season. Hiller was assisted on the play by senior forward Rachel Ugolik (Hamden, Conn.) and marked Ugolik's second assist of the season.

The Blue Devils got on the board in the 19th minute when freshman Anya Bornstein notched the equalizer. The goal marked Bornstein's first collegiate tally.

Providence answered in the 31st minute when senior Jill Clapp (Marshfield, Mass.) notched her second goal of the season, assisted by sophomore Casey Estey (Kensington, N.H.). Estey continued the Friars attack in the 43rd minute notching her second goal of the season to put the Friars up 3-1 at the half. The Friars recorded a total of five shots in the first half.

The second half remained scoreless for both teams with the Friars and Central Connecticut each recorded seven shots on the half. The Friars recorded their fifth victory of the season.

Senior goalkeeper Kristyn Shea (Piscataway, N.J.) recorded one save on the game. Central Connecticut goalkeeper Nicki Turley recorded five saves.

Coach Lopes stated after the game, "Very proud for a few reasons: the response from Harvard, the positive reaction after conceding and how well we played in all aspects of the game. It was a total team effort, many players stepped up and tonight more importantly, we grew in more ways than just becoming a better soccer team."

The Friars will return to action on Sunday, Sept. 18 to take on the University of Massachusetts at 6:00 p.m. at Chapey Field at Anderson Stadium.
