Volleyball Set To Take On Georgetown And Villanova

Providence, R.I. - The Providence College volleyball team is set to take on BIG EAST rivals Georgetown and Villanova on Oct. 7 and 8, respectively. The Friars look to rebound against the Hoyas and Wildcats after dropping matches against Xavier and Butler. Providence takes on Georgetown on Oct. 7 at 6:00 p.m. and Villanova on Oct. 8 at 7:00 p.m. There will be live stats and live streams for both matches. The live streams are pay-per-view. SCOUTING PROVIDENCE: Providence has a 12-8 (0-4) record at this point in the season. The Friars are coming off losses against Butler and Xavier. The Friars have employed a mix of senior experience and underclassmen talent.


The Friars' attack is being led by mainly underclassmen. Sophomore Megan Onyundo (Woodbridge, Va.) is leading Providence with 189 kills (3.00 k/s). Sophomore Allison Impellizeri (Seaford, N.Y.), freshman Cayla Veverka (Collegeville, Pa.) and senior Kayla Fitzgerald (Redlands, Calif.) have all been strong as well recording 157 (2.34 k/s), 142 (2.18 k/s) and 138 (1.97 k/s) kills, respectively. Freshman Jenae Alderson (Brooklyn Park, Minn.) has been solid as of late as well, recording 95 kills (2.26 k/s) in only 42 sets played. Chicyia Clark (Huntington Beach, Calif.) has set the Friars attack all season, recording 671 assists (9.59 a/s). Clark also has had great success while serving this season, tallying 24 aces (.34 sa/s) to be ranked third in the BIG EAST for service aces.

The Friars' standout quality this season has been their defense. Providence is currently ranked first in the BIG EAST for Opponents Hitting Percentage (.162) and third for digs per set (15.9 d/s). Michelle Cruz (Midland Park, N.J.) has been the leader of the Friars' defensive efforts as she averages 4.89 digs per set, good for the third best average in the BIG EAST. Cruz is currently number seven in the NCAA for total digs with 362. Clark, Onyundo and Fitzgerald have also been essential defensively, tallying 162, 155 and 153 digs, respectively. Impellizeri has been a force on the front line tallying 72 blocks (1.10 b/s) this season. Impellizeri is currently ranked third in the BIG EAST for blocks per set.

SCOUTING GEORGETOWN: The Georgetown Hoyas enter the weekend with a 5-13 (1-4) record. The Hoyas are currently on a three game losing streak after dropping matches against Seton Hall, Marquette and DePaul. As a team, Georgetown is ranked last in the BIG EAST for opponents' kills per set average (12.9 kills per set).

The Hoya attack is being led by Alyssa Sinnette. Sinnette has tallied 229 kills (3.52 k/s) this season. Symone Speech and Liv King have also been strong on the attack, tallying 205 kills (3.15 kps) and 144 kills (2.67 k/s), respectively, this season. Paige McKnight has set the attack for Georgetown, tallying 663 assists (10.05 a/s) this season. Kenzie Higareda leads Georgetown's defense by averaging 4.38 digs per set and has tallied 289 digs this season.

SCOUTING VILLANOVA: The Villanova Wildcats have a 12-6 (3-2) record at this point in the season. As a team, the Wildcats are ranked in the top two in the BIG EAST for three offensive categories. Villanova is ranked second for kills per set (14.1), second for assists per set (13.0) and first in service aces per set (1.6).

Allie Loitz has been the Wildcats' most effective attacking player. Loitz has tallied 228 kills, with a 3.86 kill per set ratio, and 26 service aces, with a .44 service aces per set ratio, this season. In the BIG EAST, Loitz is ranked third for kills per set and first for service aces per set. Claire Crutchfield has also been an important part of the attack, recording 177 kills (3.16 k/s) this season. Setting the attack has been Emma Decker, who has recorded 639 assists (11.62 a/s) this season.

Defensively, Villanova has been led by Regan Lough and Allison Fitzgerald. Both have totaled 196 digs this season. Amanda Pedersen-Henry has been a force on the frontline, recording a total of 54 blocks (.93 blks/s).
