PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Several former Providence College men's hockey players are having successful seasons in pro hockey, including Tim Schaller '13, who made his National Hockey League (NHL) debut, and Matt Taormina '09, who has been selected to play in the American Hockey League (AHL) All-Star game.
This season, Schaller became the 31st Friar to play in the NHL when he debuted for Buffalo on Nov. 29, 2014. He then notched his first career goal at the TD Garden on Dec. 21, becoming the 25th Friar to score an NHL goal. Schaller has played in six games for Buffalo this season and has also played 36 games for Buffalo's AHL affiliate Rochester, scoring 12 goals and adding 14 assists for 26 points.
In 36 games with the Worcester Sharks, Taormina, a defenseman, has four goals and 13 assists for 17 points. It will be Taormina's first All-Star game appearance and he will be playing for the Eastern Conference. The 2015 AHL All-Star Classic presented by Turning Stone Resort Casino will take place Jan. 25-26 in Utica, N.Y.
Other former Friars to play in the NHL this season include Colin McDonald '07 and Mark Fayne '10.
McDonald played two games for the New York Islanders (NHL). He also has played 32 games for the Islanders' AHL affiliate the Bridgeport Sound Tigers, scoring 12 goals and adding 18 assists for 30 points.
In his first season with the Edmonton Oilers (NHL), Fayne, a defenseman, has played 44 games while scoring a goal and registering four assists for five points.
First year pros include forward Derek Army '14 and defensemen Steven Shamanski '14 and Kevin Hart '14. Army has played 33 games for the Wheeling Nailers (ECHL), scoring 12 goals and adding 14 assists for 26 points. Shamanski, who has also played one game with the Rochester American (AHL), has played 35 games for the Elmira Jackals. He has eight goals and 16 assists for 24 points. Hart also plays for the Jackals. He has skated in 36 games and has seven points on a goal and six assists.
