PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Cox Sports 15th Anniversary Celebration of the 1997 Providence College Men's Basketball Elite Eight Friars continued on Saturday, May 12 with a VIP cocktail reception and dinner honoring the former players and coaching staff at the Westin Hotel in Providence, R.I.
Head Coach Pete Gillen, assistant coach Tom Herrion, assistant coach Bobby Gonzalez, Jamel Thomas, Llewellyn Cole, Mark Adams, Ruben Garces, God Shammgod, Corey Wright, Kendrick Moore, Jason Murdock, Rick Cordella and Dennis Clearly all attended the celebration.
John Rooke, voice of Providence College Friar Basketball, along with former Friar great Joe Hasset led the program. Providence College President, Reverend Brian J. Shanley, O.P., Athletics Director Bob Driscoll and current Friar Head Coach Ed Cooley and 1997 graduate Mark Gasbarro all addressed the crowd. Pete Gillen, who coached the 1997 squad, also took the stage to reflect on some of the team's greatest memories and stories.
After viewing an Elite Eight highlight video, the crowd was treated to a question and answer session led by Bill Reynolds and Kevin McNamara of the Providence Journal.
The event will be broadcast via tape delay on the Ocean State Network on Cox Cable channel 5 and 1005. It is scheduled to air on May 19 at 7:00 p.m. and May 23 at 7:00 p.m.
