PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The City of Providence today named a street after the late Dave Gavitt. Gavitt, who is a member of the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame, served as a coach and athletic director at Providence College. He also founded the BIG EAST and served as the league's first commissioner. The rededication of Service Road #8 to Dave Gavitt Way occurred at 1 p.m. today with a ceremony on the corner of Westminster Street and Dave Gavitt Way.

Former coach and longtime friend of Dave Gavitt, Donald "Dee" Rowe served as the master of ceremonies of the event. Rhode Island Governor Lincoln Chafee, Providence College President Fr. Brian J. Shanley, O.P., and Dan Gavitt all spoke at the event.

"On behalf of my family I want to thank everyone that made this possible," Dan Gavitt said. "If my dad was here today he would be humbled. He loved PC, the City of Providence and the State of Rhode Island. He was a proud Rhode Islander." Many former Friars attended the event, including stars of his great teams from the 1970's, Ernie DiGregorio, Marvin Barnes, Kevin Stacom and Joe Hassett.

"It is fitting that we are dedicating this road on the day that we have a basketball game," Fr. Shanley said. "Because everything we do as a basketball program is possible because of Dave. Dave Gavitt made our world a better place everyday."
