PROVIDENCE, R.I. -After concluding an eight-match road trip to open the season, the Providence College volleyball team will open the home portion of its schedule on Wednesday, September 7, when they play host to Brown. First serve against the crosstown rival Bears is set for 7:00 p.m.
The Friars enter the match 2-6 and looking to halt a four-match losing streak that includes losses at Holy Cross and in three matches to Memphis, San Francisco and Columbia at the USF asics/Powerade Challenge in San Francisco, Calif.
Providence is led by senior captain Lauren Fletcher (Syracuse, N.Y.). The middle blocker leads the team with 3.13 kills per set and a .342 hitting percentage. She is also averaging 0.71 blocks per set. The offense is set up by classmate and fellow captain Carly Morrison(Larkspur, Calif.), who is averaging 6.03 assists per set.
The Friar defense is led by junior libero Cassie Muzzonigro (Gibsonia, Pa.). Muzzonigro is posting 4.87 digs per set and was named to the USF asics/Powerade Challenge All-Tournament Team. Freshman Colleen McCollom(Indian Head Park, Ill.) sees action in the front and back rows. She is second on the team in both kills (1.74) and digs (2.48) per set.
The Brown Bears enter the match with a 1-2 record following play at the Sacred Heart Invitational. The Bears dropped the opener to Sacred Heart (3-0) and their second match to Rutgers (3-2) before rebounding for a win over Hartford (3-1). Brown is coached by Diane Short, who has been head coach of the Bears since 1993. She spent three years as an assistant coach at Providence College (1989-91).
Maddie Lord and Emma Pastore led the attack on the weekend. Lord, a freshman outside hitter, averaged an impressive 4.25 kills per set, while hitting .201. Pastore, just a sophomore, notched 35 kills in the three matches, good for 2.92 per set. The offense runs through sophomore setter Alexandra Rieckhoff, who picked up 121 assists in the first three matches, an average of 10.08 per set. Senior Annika Gliottone leads the back row and is averaging 6.33 digs per set.
