PROVIDENCE, R.I. -
It was announced yesterday that Providence College senior Marshon Brooks (Stone Mountain, Ga.) was named to the USBWA District I All-District Team. Brooks receives the award a year after former teammate Jamine Peterson was the last Friar to earn this honor.
The honors have been accumulating this week for Brooks. On Wednesday, he was named to the NABC Division I All-District 5 First Team. On Monday, he was named a FOXsports.com Fourth Team All-American, a day after being named First Team All-BIG EAST. Brooks had one of the greatest offensive seasons in the history of the league. Brooks broke the BIG EAST single-game scoring mark when he recorded 52 points on 20-28 shooting against No. 9 Notre Dame on February 23. His 20 field goals against No. 9 Notre Dame set a BIG EAST record for the most field goals in a game. He also established the BIG EAST single-season scoring mark with 468 points in 18 league games. Brooks set these records while leading the league in scoring in overall action (24.6 ppg) and in league action (26.0 ppg). He averaged 26.0 ppg in 18 league games, which is the fifth highest single-season average in 32 years of BIG EAST play.
He is the first Providence College player to receive All-America recognition since Ryan Gomes in 2005.
He is the only player in the nation averaging at least 24.0 points per game and 7.0 rebounds per game. His 24.6 ppg average ranks second in the nation. Brooks became the ninth Friar all-time to earn All-BIG EAST First Team honors and the first since Herbert Hill earned the accolade in 2007. It also is the 10th time a PC player has received All-BIG EAST First Team.
Brooks, whose season came to end on March 8 as the team was defeated by Marquette in the BIG EAST Tournament, had a very productive season as he has scored 20 or more points in 26 of 32 games, including four games where he scored 30 or more points. For the season, he recorded 788 points, which ranks as the third highest single season total in Friar history. He also registered 276 field goals, which is the fourth highest single season total all-time at PC. He provided 32.5 percent of the team's offense becoming just the second Friar since 1967 to account for at least 30 percent of the team's scoring. That total is the fourth most ever in a single season at Providence.
For his career, Brooks scored 1,629 points. He ranks ninth all-time in scoring at Providence and averaged 14.4 ppg for his career.
