PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College volleyball team fell in a three-set match to Brown (16-25, 24-26, 20-25) across town on the campus of Brown University. The Friars fall to 1-8 on the season, while Brown improves to 2-2.
The Friars were led by reigning America East player of the week Lauren Fletcher (Syracuse, N.Y.). The junior middle-blocker notched 10 kills while hitting at a .333 clip for the match. Junior setter Carly Morrison (Larkspur, Calif.) also had a solid night, recording 21 assists, while sophomore Cassie Muzzonigro (Gibsonia, Pa.) led the defense with eight digs.
The Friars struggled early in the first set, falling down 10-4 including a stretch that saw the Bears take 12-of-13 points. Brown registered six service aces in the match, which coupled with five Friar errors, allowed Brown to take the set, 25-16.
The second set saw a re-energized Providence squad trade blows with the Bears and jump out to a 14-11 lead, keyed by two kills from Fletcher and a kill from junior Shelagh Dolan (Westford, Mass.) which led to a Brown timeout. After the timeout, things were incredibly even, but a pair of errors sealed the set for the Bears, 26-24.
Providence again struggled at the start of the third set and fell behind 6-0. After rallying within two points at 12-10, the Friars struggled to keep any momentum they had built following a Brown timeout, and the Bears cruised to a 25-19 win for the match.
Providence returns to the court this Friday and Saturday, September 10-11, for the seventh annual Friar Classic at Mullaney Gymnasium. The Friars open on play Friday night at 8:00 p.m. against St. Francis (N.Y.). Action continues for Providence on Saturday against Coppin State (11:00 a.m.) and Fairleigh Dickinson (5:00 p.m.).
