Providence Volleyball Set For First America East Matches

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - For the first time in program history, the Providence College volleyball team (7-11, 0-0 America East) will play America East matches this Friday and Sunday, October 1 and 3. The Friars open up league play with Stony Brook (5-11, 0-0) at 6:00 p.m., then return to the court Sunday to host Hartford (5-12, 0-0) at 1:00 p.m.

Providence is opening league play for the first time since the 2002 season, when they competed in the BIG EAST Conference. The Friars played as an independent from 2003-09. In 2010, they become the seventh member of the America East volleyball league. League play will see 12 matches, with the Friars taking on each institution twice, once at home and once on the road.

The Friars come into league play led by junior Lauren Fletcher (Syracuse, N.Y.), who is leading America East in kills per set, with 3.72. The middle blocker is also second in the conference in hitting percentage (.323), third in blocks per set (1.08) and seventh in aces per set (0.35). Joining Fletcher on the attack are classmates Shelagh Dolan (Westford, Mass.) and Lauren Hendel (Lloyd Harbor, N.Y.), who have notched 1.74 and 1.95 kills per set, respectively. Setter Carly Morrison (Larkspur, Calif.) gets the attack started. The junior is averaging 7.52 assists per set, good for fifth in the league.

Defensively, the Friars are led by sophomore Cassie Muzzonigro (Gibsonia, Pa.). The libero ranks fifth in the league in digs per set at 3.74. Senior co-captain Emily Morris (Hermosa Beach, Calif.) is also strong in the back row, recording 2.95 digs per set, while averaging nearly a kill per set and ranking third in the league in service aces per set (0.37).

The Opposition
Stony Brook University (5-11, 0-0) The Seawolves are coming off a five-set win at home over Long Island. The win snapped a four-game losing skid for Stony Brook. The Seawolves are led by the front-row tandem of senior Ashley Headen and junior Alicia Nelson. Headen leads the squad in hitting percentage at .306, which ranks third in the league, while notching 2.73 kills per set. Nelson ranks sixth in the league in kills per set with 3.37, tops for the Seawolves.

The Seawolf setter is junior Kelsey Sullivan, who is posting 6.70 assists per set. Defensively, Stony Brook is led by junior Jeanette Gibbs, who is averaging 2.90 digs per set.

Stony Brook is coached Deborah Matejka-DesLauriers, who is a 1991 graduate of Providence College. Matejka-DesLauriers played for the Friars from 1987-90. Her .340 hitting percentage as a senior stood as a program record for 17 years. She was inducted into the Providence College Athletic Hall of Fame in 2008.

Providence and Stony Brook have had two common opponents thus far on the season. Both teams defeated Quinnipiac on the road, the Seawolves in straight-sets, the Friars in four sets. In addition, both teams lost to Brown. Stony Brook fell to the Bears at home in five-sets, while the Friars fell in straight-sets to their cross-town rivals.

University of Hartford (5-12, 0-0) The Hawks will be resuming play on Friday, October 1, at New Hampshire, ending a seven-day layoff, before they come to Providence on Sunday, October 3. Their previous match came on Thursday, September 23, when they fell to Sacred Heart in straight-sets. Hartford has lost their last three matches, entering league play this weekend.

The Hawks are led by sophomore Kami Nethersole, who ranks seventh in the league in kills per set (3.34) and eighth in hitting percentage (.212). In addition, junior Michelle Cordell and freshman Dionna Kriton are averaging just over 2.00 kills per set at 2.03 and 2.02, respectively. The setter for Hartford is senior Lindsay Ford. She boasts a 8.56 assist per set average that ranks fourth in the conference.

Defensively, junior Danielle Etta leads the way with 3.25 digs per set. The back row is bolstered by Kirton (2.35 digs per set), Ford (2.16 digs per set) and junior Sydney Scott (2.20 digs per set).

Thus far, the Hawks and Friars have had four common opponents on the season. Both teams lost to Brown in straight-sets. Both teams have defeated Holy Cross, Providence in four sets, Hartford in five. Hartford was swept by Quinnipiac, while Providence took a four-set win from the Bobcats. Providence fell to Navy in four sets, while Hartford defeated the Mids in five sets.

On-Deck
The Friars return to non-conference action on Tuesday, October 5 when they play host to in-state rival Rhode Island. The match is set for 7:00 p.m. at Providence's Mullaney Gymnasium.
