Box Score

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College volleyball team (1-5, 0-0) lost the opening match of the Bucknell Invitational to Iona College (3-2, 0-0), falling in four sets (17-25, 23-25, 25-21, 13-25).

The Friars struggled to get things going offensively, hitting only. 138 as a team in the match. As has become the norm, Margot Royer-Johnson's squad was led by junior Lauren Fletcher (Syracuse, N.Y.). The middle blocker notched a team-high 11 kills, despite a season-low for hitting percentage. Helping out Fletcher on the attack were juniors Lauren Hendel (Lloyd Harbor, N.Y.) and Carly Morrison (Larkspur, Calif.), who both recorded nine kills. Morrison flirted with a triple-double, as the setter also notched 25 assists and seven digs.

Defensively it was once again sophomore Cassie Muzzonigro leading the way, this time with 26 digs. Freshman Anne Powers (La Selva Beach, Calif.) also helped out with eight digs.

Providence struggled in the first set, hitting only .033 to the Gaels' .216 percentage and dropping the set 25-17. The Friars picked things up in the second set and built a 15-11 lead before Iona was able to put the set away 25-23. The third set again proved to be the best for Providence, as they have won the third set in four of six matches this season. Hendel led the way in the third, notching five of her nine kills in the set. Morrison also picked up four kills and seven assists, while the Friars hit .375 in the frame and picked up a 25-21 win. Iona led from the start of the fourth set, jumping out to an 11-3 lead before winning it 25-13.

The Friars will look to rebound at the Bucknell Invitational on Saturday, September 4, as they take on Eastern Michigan at 3:00 p.m., followed by the host Bison at 5:00 p.m.
