PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College volleyball team (1-7, 0-0) dropped its final two matches at the Bucknell Invitational, falling to Eastern Michigan (20-25, 13-25, 18-25) in three sets before dropping a hard-fought five-set match to host Bucknell (22-25, 25-21, 25-14, 19-25, 16-14).

The Friars struggled in the first match, recording more attack errors then kills, but then Margot Royer-Johnson saw her squad return in the night-cap to put up a fight, led by junior Lauren Fletcher (Syracuse, N.Y.), who notched 24 kills while hitting at a blistering .477 clip.

Eastern Michigan 3, Providence 0 Not much went right for Providence in the first match, as they just could not get things going offensively. The first set saw Providence rally to tie the score at 20, before the Eagles' Erin Short recorded a kill and a service ace to give Eastern Michigan a 22-20 lead. Short was able to serve out the set and the Eagles picked up a 25-20 win. The second set saw the Friars record only one kill while Eastern picked up a 25-13 win. Providence hung tough in the third set, but could not overcome Eastern Michigan's .542 hitting percentage in the set and the Eagles took the match with a 25-18 win. Fletcher led the way for the Friars with eight kills, while junior setter Carly Morrison (Larkspur, Calif.) added 12 assists.

Bucknell 3, Providence 2 The Friars rebounded in the second match of the day, but saw Bucknell rally to take the fourth and fifth sets and score a victory, three sets to two. The Bison picked up a victory in the first set, as it looked as if the Friars would continue to struggle offensively, hitting only .061 as a team. Things changed in the second set, however, as Providence picked up a 25-21 win while hitting .276. The Friars were led by seven kills from Fletcher in the set. In the third, Providence took advantage of ten Bison errors to score a 25-14 win. Bucknell rebounded to score a 25-19 win to force a deciding fifth set, led by Kyleigh McAhern, who notched six kills in the fourth frame.

The fifth set saw Providence jump out to a 13-9 lead before the Bison's Emily Sawanobori rattled off five-straight serves to give Bucknell a 14-13 lead. The Friars rebounded on a kill by Fletcher to tie the set at 14, but that was followed by a Bison kill and a Friar attack error to give Bucknell the set, 16-14, and the match, 3-2.

In addition to the 24-kill performance by Fletcher, junior Shelagh Dolan (Westford, Mass.) added nine kills. Senior Emily Morris (Hermosa Beach, Calif.) picked up 23 digs and seven service aces, while Morrison registered 37 assists.

Providence will return to the court this Wednesday, September 8 when they travel across town to take on Brown. The match is set for 7:00 p.m. on the campus of Brown University. Providence returns home next weekend, September 10-11, to host the seventh annual Friar Classic at Mullaney Gymnasium.
